Guardiola calls for Man City to ‘hurt and punish’ Real Madrid
For many, the winner of this year’s Champions League will come from this fixture as the two favourites collide. With that in mind, it’s vital Manchester City bring home a positive result from Spain, allowing them to then press their home advantage in the second leg. That’s motivation enough for the defending champions, but given Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona roots, it’s hardly surprising to hear him using strong rhetoric when it comes to highlighting what his side need to do at the Bernabeu.
Guardiola doesn’t just want a professional or controlled performance. He wants Man City to ‘hurt and punish’ Los Blancos on Tuesday, with no chances given to their star players.
“We cannot come here just to control the game, we have to come here to try to hurt them, to punish them, to let them know we are here to score the goals,” he told reporters. “We are talking about Real Madrid and their ability to control many aspects of the game. We have to impose our game with who we are.
“They will be able to press high, be so aggressive. If you can do a good progress [passing move], they will drop. But everybody knows the strengths from transitions they have with Rodrygo, [Jude] Bellingham, [Federico] Valverde, Vinícius Júnior.”
