In the Champions League semi-finals for the fourth time — and third in three years — Man City will be hoping to reach the final for just the second time in their history, and there is every chance of them doing so. Man City are in excellent form across all competitions this season, unbeaten in 21 games since losing to Tottenham in February, and it has them still on course for the Treble.

Only one English men’s team has won the Treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League: Man City’s rivals Manchester United in 1998/99, but Pep Guardiola’s men will be hoping they can end that long wait. Four points clear at the top of the Premier League with three games left to play, Man City are also in the final of the FA Cup and go into the second leg of their Champions League semi-final level with Real Madrid thanks to Kevin De Bruyne cancelling out Vinicius Jr’s opener.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, are set to go all in on the Champions League once again. Although Los Blancos have already secured the Copa del Rey this season, their La Liga title hopes are over, having struggled to keep up with Barcelona and suffering recent defeats to Girona and Real Sociedad.

But Real Madrid in the Champions League are a different beast. The defending champions are looking to secure their 15th Champions League title and sixth in 10 years in what has been a phenomenal period of dominance, breaking various records. However, the last time Real Madrid drew the first leg of a Champions League semi-final against an English side, they were knocked out and are winless in their previous four away games against Manchester City in the UCL (D2 L2), losing each of the last two. The only team they have faced more times away from home in the European Cup/Champions League without ever winning is Milan (D2 L5).

Man City vs Real Madrid match stats

When the full-time whistle went at the Santiago Bernabeu, Kyle Walker was seen with a big smile on his face, hugging Vinicius Jr knowing his job was over. However, he’ll have another tough match on Wednesday and Vinicius will be looking to find the net again, having opened the scoring with a rocket for his seventh Champions League goal of the season.

The Brazilian has been directly involved in 12 goals in just 11 Champions League appearances this season (7 goals, 5 assists), while all seven of his knockout round goals in the competition have come against English sides (5 vs. Liverpool & 2 vs. Man City). He needs just one more strike in the competition to level up with some Real Madrid legends and join Gareth Bale, Luis Figo, Roberto Carlos and Guti on 16 Champions League goals for Los Blancos.

In the first leg there was a goal in each half but both Man City and Real Madrid are much more potent after extra-time in the Champions League this season. Both having scored nine goals in the opening 45 minutes, Man City’s tally after half time doubles to 18 (more than any other club this season), while Real Madrid are only one behind on 17 goals scored after half time.
