The English side were beaten 1-2 at home by the defending European champions in the first leg of their Champions League knockout phase play-off. Real Madrid to win and BTTS (13/8 with BoyleSports)

Man City have lost their way somewhat in the Champions League, particularly on the road. Pep Guardiola’s men have been defeated in their last three away games in the competition. Some hope will be offered by the fact that Real Madrid are yet to keep a clean sheet at the Bernabeu in the Champions League this season. With the sheer amount of attacking talent that will be on display here, it’s only right to expect goals and and it’s worth noting that both teams have found the net in eight of the nine meetings between the two clubs in the last five years. Los Blancos often appear to have the edge in this competition, particularly in front of their own fans and we can see them securing the route through to the last sixteen in another goal-filled affair.

Kylian Mbappe to score, Vinicius Junior to be carded and Savinho over 0.5 shots on target and (11/1 with BoyleSports)

Kylian Mbappe has really found his shooting boots lately for Real Madrid. The Frenchman scored in the first leg at the Etihad Stadium and again in the La Liga draw with Osasuna over the weekend, taking his recent tally to 11 from his last 10 appearances in all competitions. Vinicius Junior is always a good bet for a card – the Brazilian has been booked 11 times in all competitions for his club this season, including three times in his seven Champions League outings. Savinho has taken at least one shot in each of his last nine matches in all competitions and although he’s not been the most prolific of City players this season, the 20 year old did hit the target with two of his three shots against Newcastle United at the weekend.

How both teams go into Real Madrid vs Man City

This game being battle between the last two European champions, one of Real Madrid and Man City will not make the Champions League last 16. Real Madrid are the defending champions but their attempts to retain the crown didn’t get off to the best start. Los Blancos lost three of their opening five matches, beaten by Liverpool, Lille and AC Milan. But they won their final three group stage matches to reach the knockout phase play-offs. And now they’re in a good position to reach the last 16 thanks to their first leg victory. Their La Liga aspirations have taken a hit of late though as they’ve earned just two of the last available nine points in the league to lose the top spot in the table to arch rivals Barcelona.

This season has been a disaster for Man City. They’re out of the Premier League title race and aren’t guaranteed a top four finish. Their struggles have carried over to the Champions League too. Man City went into their final group game knowing only victory would secure passage into the knockout phase play-offs and even then, they couldn’t rank higher than an unseeded side. The Citizens finished 22nd in the group with just three wins from eight games, setting up this difficult tie against Real Madrid where they have a mountain to climb after defeat on home soil. They did at least build some confidence at the weekend with a comfortable 4-0 home win over Newcastle United with January signing Omar Marmoush netting a hat-trick.

Real Madrid team news

Real Madrid are continuing to suffer from defensive issues with Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal ruled out for the rest of the season. However in more positive news, Antonio Rudiger could be set to return to the side for this game alongside David Alaba. Lucas Vazquez is also considered fit enough to be considered for a place on the bench, while Federico Valverde is expected to pass a late fitness test.

Man City team news

Manchester City may be set to welcome a few players of their own back into the fold. Jack Grealish had to come off in the first leg against Real Madrid, but Pep Guardiola remains hopeful that he’ll return for the second leg on Wednesday night. Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake missed out against Newcastle but are both expected to return, although Manuel Akanji is set for a lengthy absence while Rodri continues to miss out.
