Can ‘angry’ Barcelona keep La Liga title race alive?

While Real Madrid are euphoric after getting past Manchester City to reach yet another Champions League semi-final, Barcelona may well be licking their wounds and feeling humbled after their 4-1 quarter-final second-leg thrashing to PSG. But they cannot sulk for too long with El Clasico coming on Sunday. The Blaugrana trail their arch-rivals by eight points with seven games to play but have done brilliantly to even remain in with a chance, going unbeaten in their last 10 La Liga matches.

A win here would see them move just five points behind Madrid with six games to play, putting pressure on Los Blancos at a time when they’d rather be focusing on the Champions League. And Barca legend Carlos Puyol believes his former side need to channel any ‘anger’ from their Champions League exit and take it out on Real Madrid, keeping their title hopes alive in the process.

“It comes at a difficult time for Barcelona after the elimination, but it is also an opportunity to get involved in the league and we will see what happens in the end,” he said.

“When you have a blow like the one the other day, what you are waiting for is that the next game comes quickly to be able to change the situation, the dynamic, get all the anger out. I think that’s what the team has to do.

“It is clear that we need a positive result to be able to get involved in the fight for the league. Madrid is coming from a very great effort and we hope that it shows and that they cannot be so fresh. We have to think about Barcelona and if we want to have hope, we have to get a positive result.”
