Rangers vs Benfica Europa League Predictions: Tips and Odds

Rangers and Benfica meet in the second leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie on Thursday at 5:45pm (UK time).

Rangers and Benfica have played against each other three times, and all matches have ended in entertaining draws, including a 2-2 stalemate in Lison last week. However, in this upcoming encounter, one must emerge victorious. Despite playing well in Lisbon, Rangers fell short of making history, according to their manager, Philippe Clement.

The Scottish team defended resolutely, helped by the impressive goalkeeper Jack Butland, while Benfica attempted 24 shots on goal and 13 corners but failed to capitalize on their chances. The Eagles need to be at their clinical best and contend with Ibrox’s strong home advantage if they want to come out on top in Glasgow.

Furthermore, when failing to win the first leg at home in a two-legged knockout stage tie in European competition, Benfica have only managed to progress on one of the previous five occasions (v Ajax in the round of 16 in the Champions League in 2021-22 – 2-2 at home, 1-0 away).

Benfica won their first away game in a European competition in Scotland in September 1960 against Heart of Midlothian in the European Cup (2-1) but have been winless in five such matches since (two draws and three losses).

After beating Crvena Zvezda 4-2 on aggregate in 2021-22, Rangers are looking to qualify from consecutive ties in the round of 16 in the Europa League – this after previously failing to do so in any of their first three ties at this stage of the competition (eliminated in 2010-11, 2019-20 and 2020-21).
