PSV are perfect heading into ‘De Topper’ with nine wins from nine played. Peter Bosz’s side boast a mean attack with 30 goals scored while possessing the league’s best defence (three conceded). Ajax, meanwhile, are in unfamiliar territory. The struggling Dutch powerhouse are second from bottom and could theoretically end the weekend at rock bottom.

An unwanted historic start
As touched upon, it’s been a miserable few weeks for the record Dutch champions. Accumulating only five points from their opening seven games means this is their worst start to an Eredivisie season in nearly 60 years. Maurice Steijn, who until the summer had never managed a club of Ajax’s stature, was relieved of his duties after suffering a fourth top-flight loss. That aforementioned setback at Utrecht saw them post an eighth consecutive match in all competitions without a win; something they’ve never experienced in the professional era. This was ultimately the straw that broke the camel’s back. It remains to be seen who Steijn’s long-term successor would be with John van ‘t Schip — who in the past led the club’s youth team as well as temporarily filling in for the first team — reportedly pencilled in to be an interim until further notice.
Either way, coming up against a perfect PSV side that has torn about everything they’ve faced in domestic play is not what Ajax need this weekend.
