An unwanted historic start

Maurice Steijn, who until the summer had never managed a club of Ajax’s stature, was relieved of his duties after suffering a fourth top-flight loss. That aforementioned setback at Utrecht saw them post an eighth consecutive match in all competitions without a win; something they’ve never experienced in the professional era. This was ultimately the straw that broke the camel’s back. It remains to be seen who Steijn’s long-term successor would be with John van ‘t Schip — who in the past led the club’s youth team as well as temporarily filling in for the first team — reportedly pencilled in to be an interim until further notice.
Either way, coming up against a perfect PSV side that has torn about everything they’ve faced in domestic play is not what Ajax need this weekend.
