How both teams go into Preston vs Aston Villa

Preston are in dream land. But they won’t want the dream to stop here. The Championship side are enjoying their best run in the FA Cup since the 1965-66 season, when they reached the quarter-finals. They’d only reached the fifth round six times since then. But 2024-25 is proving to be different. Preston have had a bit of fortune with the FA Cup draw this season, facing two League One sides in the third and fourth rounds. But it wasn’t easy. Preston beat Charlton Athletic 2-1 before needing penalties to knock out Wycombe Wanderers. They did have a statement victory in the fifth round, though, scoring three without reply against the Championship’s best defence — Burnley.

There’s a Premier League side awaiting in the quarter-finals though. And Aston Villa will be seeking cup glory. The Villans haven’t won a major trophy since 1996, but they’ve been FA Cup runners-up twice since then. Their most recent FA Cup final was in 2014-15, when they were beaten by Arsenal. But the Villans have hated this competition since. In fact, Aston Villa have won more games in the 2024-25 FA Cup (three) than they did in the previous nine campaigns combined (two). West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Cardiff City have all fallen to Aston Villa this season, but this is their first away game of the competition.

Preston team news

Josh Seary, Brad Potts, Jack Whatmough and Ali McCann injured for Preston, while Kaine Kesler-Hayden is unable to face his parent club and Ryan Porteous is cup-tied. Sam Greenwood will be suspended after his red card against Portsmouth in the Championship last time out, with Ryan Ledson also serving an FA Cup ban for yellow card accumulation.

Aston Villa team news

Aston Villa will hope for a good international break and the returns of Ollie Watkins and Ross Barkley.

Preston vs Aston Villa head-to-head

It’s now been over six years since these two sides last met. Aston Villa are unbeaten in the past five meetings, but four of those were draws — and they all came in the Championship.
