Portugal vs France Euro 2024 prediction: Can Euro 2016 final rematch deliver?

Portugal vs France latest prediction

For the third European Championship in a row, Portugal and France will face off. At Euro 2020 it was a group stage fixture that ended level, while Portugal beat France 1-0 in the Euro 2016 final which was hosted by the latter. But although these sides are now just three wins away from Euro 2024 neither have really looked capable of going all the way.

Portugal did win their first two group stage matches, beating Czech Republic and Turkey, the latter a 3-0 win that secured top spot. But the perfect start came to an end as Portugal were beaten 2-0 by Georgia in their final group game, albeit having fielded a much-rotated XI.

In the last 16, the Euro 2016 champions were taken all the way by Slovenia. Try as they might, Portugal could not breach the Slovenian net, with Cristiano Ronaldo missing a penalty in extra-time. But when it came to the penalty shootout, Portugal scored three spot-kicks with Diogo Costa the hero, saving the three he faced to secure the win.

France, meanwhile, underwhelmed in their group. Despite being placed alongside Netherlands, Austria and Poland, France were expected to finish top of their group. They opened with a win over Austria, though they struggled to break Ralf Rangnick’s side down and only got the victory through an own goal.

Then France suffered back-to-back draws. The first was goalless against Netherlands, who had a goal ruled out for offside, before Poland fought back to secure a 1-1 draw with both goals coming from the penalty spot. France faced tough opposition in the last 16, Belgium, scraping through with another unconvincing 1-0 win.

Portugal face France in the Euro 2024 quarter-final at 8pm on Friday 5th July at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg.

This game will see a battle of two wonderful goalscorers, Cristiano Ronaldo against Kylian Mbappe. At Euro 2024 they’ve combined to score one goal. Mbappe is the man to have got the goal, but that did come from the penalty spot.

In fact, France are yet to have a player score from open play at Euro 2024, with their other two goals being own goals. Three of their four games have seen less than two goals scored, with the only exception the 1-1 draw with Poland.

Portugal latest team news

Despite their struggles to break Slovenia down, we may not see Roberto Martinez making any changes to his starting XI. The likes of Diogo Jota, Francisco Conceicao and Joao Felix are all much better coming off the bench than starting for Portugal.

Martinez will also need the midfield duo of Vitinha and Joao Palhinha to be on form, particularly against N’Golo Kante in the French midfield. There is also the question of Pepe, who struggled late on in the win over Slovenia. Will Martinez take the risk of him going up against Mbappe?

Portugal have a host of players at risk of suspension should they be booked here, with Joao Cancelo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Francisco Conceicao, Joao Palhinha, Pedro Neto and Ruben Neves all walking a tightrope.

France latest team news

Adrien Rabiot will have to sit this game out after picking up his second yellow card of the tournament against Belgium. Eduardo Camavinga is the number one contender to replace him in the midfield, if France stick with a midfield three.

That formation, putting Camavinga alongside Kante and Aurelien Tchouameni, would likely see Ousmane Dembele starting on the bench with a front three of Marcus Thuram, Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann. Dembele, Griezmann, Tchouameni and Mbappe will all be suspended if they’re booked in this game.

Portugal vs France head-to-head

This is a fixture that France have dominated with 19 wins to Portugal’s six alongside three draws. Two of those draws have come in the past four matches, with both Portugal and France winning one. Of course, Portugal’s win had significance to win, beating France 1-0 to win the Euro 2016 final in Paris.
