Can Portugal build on a strong 2023?
This is the first chance for fans to see Portugal in action in 2024, and they’ll be hoping it’s a good start to the year with the European Championships now just a few months away. There is reason for Portugal to be optimistic going into the tournament, as they look to take the European crown for the second time.
Portugal were perfect in 2023, winning all 10 of their games in qualifying for the European Championships. Sure, the level of opposition wasn’t as high as it could have been, but you can only beat what’s put in front of you. And it was a great way to build momentum going into a tournament year. They’ll be hoping there hasn’t been a disruption after four months away, but Portugal won’t know that until the meet up next week. Portugal have an interesting group at Euro 2024 too, facing Czech Republic, Turkey and one of Georgia, Luxembourg, Greece or Kazakhstan.
There will be no tournament for Sweden this summer as they failed to qualify for Euro 2024. While their group was tough, many would have predicted Sweden to return more than the 10 points they did. Finishing below Belgium and Austria, Sweden won 90% of their points in the group against Azerbaijan and Estonia. And there was also the 3-0 defeat at the hands of Azerbaijan.
As a whole last year, Sweden lost four of their 10 games, continuing what has been a tough period. In 2022, Sweden finished bottom of their Uefa Nations League group, to seal a second successive relegation in the competition. Later this year, they’ll start in League C, hoping to get back on track.
Portugal vs Sweden match tip
Portugal to win to nil @ 6/5 by 10bet
As mentioned, Portugal were extremely dominant in 2023, both in defence and attack. They kept nine clean sheets in their 10 games last year, only faltering in a 3-2 win over Slovakia in October. But they bounced back after that game, with three clean sheets on the trot to end the year.
Portugal vs Sweden odds
Looking at the form of these two nations over the past few years, it’s pretty easy to come to the conclusion of Portugal being odds-on favourites. They’d be favoured even without a perfect record last year, but when you add that to Sweden’s four defeats in 2023, there’s only one winner.
Portugal vs Sweden team news
Roberto Martinez is yet to name his squad for the upcoming international break. But he is expected to go full-strength as this will be the last real chance to fully analysis his players on the pitch ahead of the European Championships.
This is Jon Dahl Tomasson’s first break as Sweden boss, after taking charge last month. There aren’t any real surprises, with the likes of Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres, Victor Lindelof, Anthony Elanga and Dejan Kulusevski all involved.
