Porto vs Man United prediction and stats: Fernandes to pick up another card in Europa League clash
Both Porto and Manchester United will be searching for their first wins of the 2024-25 Europa League when they face off on Thursday.
Porto opened the new league phase with a 3-2 defeat to Bodo/Glimt, while Man United were held by Twente.
Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui 1+ Foul Committed (23/20 with Paddy Power)
Manchester United are averaging as many shots per game as fouls per game in the Premier League this season (12.3). At 23/20, I like the look of Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui to give away a foul, with the latter having racked up the most of United this term with 10 in 6 league appearances. When it comes to Martinez, the central defender has committed one or more foul in five of his six league matches, picking up three yellow cards in the process.
Bruno Fernandes to be Carded (7/2 with Paddy Power)
Bruno Fernandes had a decent personal record in Man United’s away games in the Champions League last season. The Man United captain was directly involved in a goal in all three away games, scoring two and providing two assists. In the 3-3 draw with Galatasaray, Fernandes both scored and assisted.

How to watch Porto vs Man United live
Porto vs Man United is set for 8pm on Thursday 3rd October and will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 2.
How both teams go into Porto vs Man United
With the dust barely settled on the first round of fixtures, the Europa League is back again. It’s now time for the second round of the league phase, with both Porto and Man United searching for a first win.
Hosts Porto were one of 13 teams to taste defeat in the first round of fixtures, falling 3-2 to Bodo/Glimt. Their Norwegian opponents were reduced to 10 men just after half-time, with Porto trailing 2-1, but they couldn’t get back into the game.
It means Porto are now winless in their last four Europa League games, though their previous three matches came in 2021-22. It was also Porto’s second defeat of the season, having lost to Sporting CP in the league at the end of August. Domestically, Porto started the campaign well and managed six wins from seven, leaving them second in the Portuguese top-flight.
For Man United, the Europa League continued their poor start to the season. The Red Devils have won just three of their opening eight games across all competitions, starting with defeat in the Community Shield. Of course, one of those wins did come against Barnsley in the EFL Cup.
Since that win, though, things have gotten worse for United. After stalemates against Crystal Palace and FC Twente, they put in an embarrassing display against Spurs, losing 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday. The pressure is building on Erik ten Hag, and a heavy defeat here could leave him in a precarious position.
Porto host Man United at the Estadio do Dragao on Thursday, 3rd October at 8pm.
Porto team news
Porto will be boosted by the return of Fabio Viera, who made his first appearance since an injury last weekend as a substitute. Ivan Marcano and Zaidu Sanusi are both out with ACL injuries, while Gelano and Pepe are expected to occupy the wide areas in attack.
Man United team news
Manchester United has numerous injury woes. Luke Shaw and Leny Yoro are on the treatment table, while Harry Maguire, Mason Mount, and Kobbie Mainoo are doubtful.
Porto vs Man United head-to-head
It’s been over 15 years since these two sides last met in the Champions League semi-finals. Man United beat Porto across the two legs to reach the final, which they lost to Barcelona. Five years earlier, Porto had knocked Man United out of the quarter-finals en route to winning the Champions League.
