Poland vs Austria Euro 2024 predictions: A can’t-lose battle in Group D

Poland and Austria know their Euro 2024 statuses will be on the line when they face off in their second Group D fixtures.

Poland vs Austria Euro 2024 Prediction: A can’t-lose battle

Poland vs Austria Latest Prediction

Given the other two teams in Group D, it’s perhaps no surprise that both Poland and Austria come into this game without a point. Poland were up against Netherlands in what would have been the more even game, and they did take the lead through Adam Buksa. However, Netherlands came back to secure a 2-1 win thanks to an equaliser from Cody Gakpo’s and Wout Weghorst’s late winner.

Poland conceded 21 shots against Netherlands while having 12 themselves and the xG between the two sides was close at 1.47 to 1.32 in favour of the Oranje. It extended their poor record at the European Championship with just two wins from their 15 games so far. Both of those victories came at Euro 2016 when they made it to the quarter-finals, only losing on penalties to eventual winners Portugal. That was also the only time they have made it past the group stage.

Austria faced France, one of the tournament’s favourites, in their opening game and some did predict them to give Les Bleus a tough game. A lot was made about Austria defence in the build up to the tournament, expected to be one of the toughest to beat. And they did limit France to just one goal, with Maximilian Wober heading Kylian Mbappe’s cross into his own net just before half time.

Like Poland, Austria have won just two matches in European Championship history, with their victories coming from 11 games. Again, both were in a single tournament, with Austria reaching the last 16 for the first time at Euro 2024, losing to eventual winners Italy after extra-time.

Despite losing 1-0 to France, and the difference in quality between the two sides, Austria ended the game with more corners than their opponents. Ralf Rangnick’s men had six in total to France’s two. At the same time, Poland only managed three corners in their game against Netherlands, while conceding six themselves.

The showdown between Poland and Austria occurs on 21st June at the Olympiastadion, Berlin.

Poland Latest Team News

Robert Lewandowski missed the defeat to Netherlands due to injury, but there is optimism that he will be back in time for this one. In his stead, 19-year-old Kacper Urbanski partnered Adam Buksa up front, with the former the most likely of the two to drop out should Lewandowski return. Karol Swiderski was expected to partner Lewandowski but he may have to settle for the bench considering Buksa scored Poland’s only goal against Netherlands.

At the back, Bartosz Salamon got the nod ahead of Pawel Dawidowicz at the heart of the back three, with Taras Romanczuk, Sebastian Szymanski and Piotr Zielinski the midfield trio. Salamon is a doubt with a slight ankle problem, and if he does succumb to injury, Dawidowicz is an easy enough straight swap in defence.

Austria Latest Team News

Patrick Pentz got the nod in goal for Austria over Heinz Lindner and Niklas Hedl, and may continue to be their No.1 for this game. Otherwise there were no real surprises in the XI, with Marko Arnautovic dropping to the bench as Ralf Rangnick opted for a 4-2-3-1, with Christoph Baumgartner playing behind Michael Gregoritsch. Marcel Sabitzer and Konrad Laimer pressed from more advanced positions, with Nicolas Seiwald and Florian Grillitsch deeper.
