The showdown between Poland and Austria occurs on June 21 at the Olympiastadion, Berlin.

Austria aims for its first major international tournament success when it travels to neighbouring Germany this summer. Under the leadership of Ralf Rangnick, known as the ‘godfather of gegenpressing’, there is a renewed belief that Austria could be a dark horse in the competition. This will be the nation’s fourth European Championship appearance, and to make history, they must successfully navigate the first knockout round.

Both teams know the best third-placed teams will advance to the knockout stages. If one team loses, they will remain optimistic, as there is still a chance to advance.

Poland Latest Team News

Michał Probierz will likely stick with three or five defenders at the back for the Euros. Wojciech Szczesny will be the goalkeeper, supported by English-based defenders Jakub Kiwior and Jan Bednarek. Przemyslaw Frankowski and Nicola Zalewski are expected to play wing-backs, while Karol Linetty may return as the defensive midfielder. Piotr Zieliński and Bartosz Slisz will provide creativity for the forward duo of Robert Lewandowski and Karol Swiderski.

Austria Latest Team News

After a disappointing stint at Manchester United, Ralf Rangnick became the manager of the Austrian national team. His first 20 matches have been successful, with 12 wins, including the last five in a row. Rangnick’s emphasis on counter-pressing will likely influence the team’s approach. The team’s formation is yet to be determined, as Rangnick has experimented with different formations.

Poland vs Austria Head-to-Head

In Group D, Poland and Austria face tough competition from France and the Netherlands. While finishing in third place seems most likely for both teams, there’s a chance they could secure second place if the Netherlands struggle and France perform as anticipated. Poland will kick off the tournament by hosting Ronald Koeman’s team, while Austria will face off against France in the first match. If these matches goes as many expect, Poland and Austria could be at zero points when they play each other. Poland has a good track record against Austria, with three wins and two draws in their last five meetings.
