The 2023/24 Premier League campaign is underway and both these sides had unfortunate starts to the new season. Nottingham Forest are in their second season back in the top flight but things weren’t comfortable in 2022/23 as they finished just four points clear of the relegation zone, only securing safety in the final few weeks of the season. It was a campaign that also saw Steve Cooper’s job constantly thrown into question, especially after Forest’s major squad reshuffle, so you feel a better year is needed. Sheffield United, meanwhile, are back in the top flight after two seasons away and will be hoping to avoid an immediate return to the Championship. The last time the Blades were promoted to the Premier League they finished ninth in their debut campaign before suffering second-season syndrome, finishing rock bottom in 2020/21. And it was a losing start to the 2023/24 campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. The Blades conceded more shots (24) than any other home side in matchday 1, while no other home side conceded more shots on target (8), in a less than impressive 90 minutes at Bramall Lane.
Only Burnley (0.3) posted a lower xG total on MD1 than Sheffield United (0.5), while Nottingham Forest were one of three teams (along with Everton and Wolves) to post a higher xG than their opponents but still lose the match (1.2 – 0.8).

Sheffield United still have a number of injury problems with John Fleck suffering another fracture in pre-season against Girona which is expected to keep him out for a few months. Fleck is joined on the sidelines by Rhian Brewster, Ismaila Coulibaly and Jayden Bogle. Midfielder Gus Hamer has joined from Coventry and could go straight into the starting XI.
