Leeds and Norwich meet in the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final after the opening game ended in a goalless stalemate. The hosts just missed out on automatic promotion after a slow end to the season, while the Canaries dropped to the final play-off place on the last weekend.

A chance for Leeds to write the wrongs
Having suffered relegation from the Premier League last year, Leeds will have been aiming for an automatic return to the top flight. And they looked on course to secure that until the campaign’s final stages. Although Ipswich was playing catch up, it felt like automatic promotion was Leeds’ to lose, and they failed.
After going on a run of 14 wins and two draws in 16 games from the start of 2024 to the beginning of April, the wheels started to fall off. Leeds won just one of their final six league games, with one draw and four defeats. Some of the defeats were damning, too, as Leeds were beaten by relegation-battling Blackburn and QPR, the latter a 4-0 thrashing. Leeds will also be wary of the history, losing the play-off semi-finals the last time they were in it, having finished third in 2018/19.
Norwich, meanwhile, won the play-offs the last time they contested them, though the Canaries had a much stronger third-place finish in the 2014/15 campaign, having just come down from the Premier League. The Canaries were also quite fortunate to hold onto their spot in the play-offs after an underwhelming finish to the regular season.
Although Norwich finished three points clear of seventh-placed Hull, they only picked up two points from their final three matches. Draws against Bristol City and Swansea put Norwich in a good position, and the goal difference was enough to keep them comfortable. But a final-day defeat to Birmingham — who were relegated despite the win — leaves some cause for concern.
Norwich and Leeds subsequently played a tense and cagey match that ended goalless in the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final. Both teams struggled to create many scoring opportunities at Carrow Road, and the spot in the Wembley final on 26 May will be determined in the second leg at Elland Road on Thursday.
