Newcastle must bounce back

Newcastle may not be considered heavily in the race for Europe, but the Magpies have an outside chance. Eddie Howe’s side went through a real period of struggle, which saw them slump down the table. At their worst, Newcastle lost four consecutive Premier League games, starting with a 1-0 defeat to Luton and ending with a 3-2 loss against Manchester City.

But Newcastle ended January with a 3-1 away win over Aston Villa, and they were able to build on that with a four-game unbeaten run. As well as beating Villa, Newcastle got their own back over Nottingham Forest with a 3-2 win, having lost to the Reds on Boxing Day. Luton held Newcastle in a thrilling 4-4 draw, while there was also a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. However, their unbeaten run came to an end last weekend as Newcastle were beaten 4-1 by Arsenal, crushing all momentum that might have been growing. It leaves the Magpies in 10th, seven points behind sixth-placed Man Utd.

The stats in their defeat to Arsenal were damning, with Newcastle managing just three shots in total, with none in the first half. They were outclassed by the title challengers, and must now recover to keep their European hopes alive.

Wolves, meanwhile, have been slightly inconsistent of late, but they are climbing the table. Gary O’Neil’s side have jumped up to ninth, one place and one point above their hosts this weekend. They moved themselves away from the relegation battle with an unbeaten run spanning four games, including three consecutive victories against Chelsea, Brentford and Everton. That winning run was ended by a goalless draw with Brighton, before losing at home to Manchester United in a thrilling 4-3 game. Wolves also lost at home to Brentford, but they have surrounded that with victories over Chelsea, Tottenham and Sheffield United — the former pair coming away from home.

Newcastle vs Wolves match tip

1+ Mario Lemina cards @ 7/4 by Lottoland

Three of the most-booked players in the Premier League this season will meet at St James’ Park. Only one player has received more yellow cards than Bruno Guimaraes’ nine, while Anthony Gordon is close to his teammate on eight. But Mario Lemina may be the one to keep an eye on. The Wolves midfielder has also been booked nine times in the Premier League, but he’s been sent off once too. Those 10 cards have come from 30 fouls in 2,014 minutes, with a lower per-90 minute record than Guimaraes (0.40 to 0.37).

This is an interesting game odds-wise, with Newcastle clear favourites, but there is reason to be wary of a Wolves victory. They’re unbeaten in their past four away Premier League games, including big wins at Stamford Bridge and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Newcastle have also drawn their past two at St James’ Park, but the Magpies have won their last two home games against Wolves.
