Battling to return to Europe
West Ham are still in the Europa League but their quarter-final draw is a tough one, pit against runaway Bundesliga leaders — and still unbeaten across all competitions — Bayer Leverkusen. So, there may be some pessimism about their chances of qualifying for Europe through that path. But in the league they’re in a good position. The Hammers are currently seventh, just three points behind the expected Conference League play-off qualification spot. There is also the chance that seventh would be enough, if Manchester City or Manchester United win the FA Cup, providing the latter don’t drop out of the European places in the league.
The Hammers were in a much stronger position going into 2024, having ended 2023 with back-to-back wins over Manchester United and Arsenal. However, West Ham went winless in their first eight matches of the year across all competitions, dropping them down the table and also seeing them knocked out of the FA Cup. But they have bounced back in the league, and are unbeaten in their past four, with two wins and two draws. However, those two draws did come in their last two games before the international break, as West Ham dealt with the Europa League last 16.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are down in 10th and know they cannot afford to drop any points if they hope to secure a second season in European football. The Magpies’ top-four finish last season was supposed to herald the start of their life higher up the table, but Newcastle struggled to deal with juggling the Champions League and Premier League in the early parts — aside from a 4-1 thrashing of PSG at St James’ Park.
Just when Newcastle looked to be settling down, finding their feet with three consecutive home wins against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United, injury struck. Fitness has been a big hindrance for Newcastle, who haven’t really been able to call upon their full-strength squad at all this season. However, Newcastle do remain within seven points of sixth-placed Man Utd and have a very favourable final run-in.
Newcastle vs West Ham match tip
Correct Score – 1st Half – 0-0 @ 31/10 with BetMGM
Although Newcastle love to score the first goal at home this season, only failing to do so in two of their 14 league matches so far, it doesn’t always lead to an advantage at the break. Eight of Newcastle’s 14 home league games this season have been level at half-time. Of those eight, five have been goalless draws. We might have to wait until the second half for the action.
Each of Newcastle’s six Premier League home games has seen at least three goals scored.
Newcastle vs West Ham odds
As the home side, the odds will always be favouring Newcastle, even though neither side are in the best of form. West Ham’s odds are slightly longer than some might have expected, but there have been a lot of draws between these two sides lately.
