Newcastle Utd vs Southampton Premier League predictions and stats: Can Magpies recover from underwhelming campaign?
Southampton will be hoping to make a positive mark on their return to the Premier League when they travel to face Newcastle.
After a year away, Southampton are back in the Premier League after their play-off final victory over Leeds in May. But can Russell Martin end the Saints’ 13 game winless streak in the top flight against a Newcastle side who are looking to win another opening day game under Eddie Howe?
Three predictions for Newcastle vs Southampton
Newcastle 2-1 Southampton (7/1 with Betano)
The Magpies enjoy facing Southampton, particularly at St James’ Park. They haven’t lost to the Saints in their past eight home games against them across all competitions, winning twice when they last met in the 2022/23 season in the league and EFL Cup. The Saints meanwhile, are without a win in their last 13 Premier League games (D4 L9).
Alexander Isak First Goalscorer (29/10 with Betano)
The Swedish striker proved his class once again last season, finishing the campaign with 21 goals in 30 Premier League appearances and becoming just the third Newcastle player after Andy Cole and Alan Shearer to score in seven consecutive Premier League matches at St.James’ Park.
He has scored 13 Premier League goals so far in 2024, including 11 in his last 12 appearances. It’s more than twice as many as any other Newcastle player has scored so far this calendar year
Newcastle To Win & BTTS (6/4 with Betano)
Despite being winless in their eight trips to St.James’ Park, Southampton have scored in each of their past six. Newcastle meanwhile, have scored in each of their last 19 Premier League home games – only between January 1995 and February 1996 have they had a longer scoring streak at St James’ Park in the competition (24).

How to watch Newcastle vs Southampton live
Newcastle vs Southampton is scheduled for 3pm (UK time) on Saturday 17th August but will not be broadcast live in the UK.
How both teams go into Newcastle vs Southampton
Southampton are back in the Premier League and they’ll want to make sure it isn’t a fleeting return. Saints achieved promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking, with Russell Martin showing they were right to pick him to lead them in the second tier.
They did have to go through the play-offs to secure that promotion, beating Leeds in the final, who had finished one place and three points above them in the table. The summer so far has been about adding depth to their squad, which some Championship sides do struggle win when making the step up. But an away trip to Newcastle is a tough start to the season.
Newcastle did have an underwhelming 2023/24 when you compare it to the season before. The Magpies failed to juggle Champions League football and the Premier League, having secured a top-four finish in 2022/23. Newcastle were knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage and finished seventh in the Premier League.
So Eddie Howe’s men will be without European football, which may be seen as a boost for their chances in the Premier League. They can now fully focus on getting back into Europe. But there have been a lot of questions in the summer about what Newcastle need to do with transfers, so the focus has been more about off-field problems rather than planning on the pitch.
Newcastle host Southampton at 3pm on Saturday 17th August at St James’ Park.
Newcastle team news
Lloyd Kelly, William Osula and Odysseas Vlachodimos have joined Newcastle this summer, with Lewis Hall’s loan move also made permanent. There have been outgoings at St James’ Park too, but none that would make too much difference to their starting XI.
Injury problems haven’t drastically improved for Eddie Howe however, with at least six players all out for this game. Dan Burn is expected to move into centre-back alongside Fabian Schär with both Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles both ruled out, so Lewis Hall should fit in at left-back. Sandro Tonali remains suspended and he will be joined in the stands by Lewis Miley, Matt Targett and Callum Wilson.
Miggy Almiron has turned down a move to MLS, so should start at RW ahead of Jacob Murphy with Anthony Gordon on the left. Nick Pope returns between the sticks.
Southampton team news
Southampton had the big boost of Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ loan move being made permanent, while Adam Lallana has also returned to the club. Adam Armstrong will be hoping he can carry his Championship goalscoring form into the Premier League and should be joined in the front three by Ben Brereton-Diaz, who spent the end of last season on loan at Sheffield United.
Gavin Bazunu continues to recover from his Achilles injury he suffered last season, with Kamaldeen Sulemana also out. Lallana and Ross Stewart are both doubts.
Newcastle vs Southampton head-to-head
Since a 2-0 defeat in November 2020, Newcastle have gone unbeaten in their past seven games against Southampton. That includes a run of five consecutive victories heading into this new season.
