Two of the Premier League’s newly ambitious clubs meet on the opening weekend. Under their new Saudi-backed ownership Eddie Howe guided Newcastle to a top-four finish at the first time of asking. It’ll mean Champions League football back at SJP after nearly two decades. Callum Wilson was Newcastle’s leading scorer with 18 goals. Miguel Almiron (11) and Alexander Isak (10) also finished with double digits.

As for Villa, they’re back in Europe after claiming seventh place, finishing that high didn’t look to be on the cards following their brutal start under Steven Gerrard who exited with former Arsenal head coach Unai Emery taking over the reins. A run of 15 wins from 25 played carried the Birmingham-based club across the line. They’ve seemingly bought well this summer which has only raised expectations for their forthcoming campaign.

So far in 2023, only Manchester City have picked up more Premier League wins (17) and more Premier League points (53) than Unai Emery’s side (13 wins, 43 points).

Newcastle United vs Aston Villa team news

All eyes were on Newcastle’s transfer activities following their successful top-four campaign last time out. Eddie Howe, though, has seen three new additions with Sandro Tonali the marquee signing. The metronomic Italian midfielder should make his Premier League debut here. Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento also join from relegated sides Leicester City and Southampton, but both players are expected to start from the bench.

It’s been an exciting summer transfer window for Aston Villa who named Monchi as their sporting director. Joining him at Villa Park is Spanish centre-back Pau Torres who has previously worked under Emery. He undoubtedly makes his Premier League debut here alongside Tyrone Mings at the heart of Villa’s defence. Youri Tielemans is also hoping to play his first competitive minutes for Aston Villa after joining from relegated Leicester but Álex Moreno and Jacob Ramsey are ruled out through respective injuries.

Emi Buendia suffered an ACL injury so will likely miss most if not all of the season, but Moussa Diaby should come straight into the attack.
