As we enter the third week of the 2024/25 Premier League season, there are eight teams still unbeaten. Two of those meet this weekend, both with Champions League aspirations.

After finishing fourth to qualify for the Champions League in 2022/23, last season was something of a disappointment for Newcastle. The Magpies slumped to seventh in the Premier League, eight points off the top four and without European football.

However, it has to be said that the Magpies suffered greatly with injuries. If Eddie Howe can maintain access to a fully fit squad, we should see great improvements. Newcastle opened the new campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over newly-promoted Southampton and were fortunate to take a draw against Bournemouth last time out.

Tottenham, meanwhile, finished fifth in their first season under Ange Postecoglou’s management. That was enough to qualify for the Europa League, signifying a massive improvement on their eighth-placed slump a year earlier.

So they will eventually have to juggle the Premier League and European responsibilities. For now, it’s been a positive start to the new campaign. After opening with a 1-1 draw against Leicester, Tottenham thrashed Everton 4-0 last weekend.

Newcastle host Tottenham at St James’ Park on Sunday 1st September at 1:30pm.

Newcastle team news

Injuries are still a problem for Newcastle. Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are long-term absentees, not expected back until 2025. Callum Wilson and Martin Dubravka aren’t expected back until after the international break, while Joe Willock picked up an injury in midweek.

Fabian Schar serves the final game of his three-match ban for his sending off against Southampton on the opening weekend.

Tottenham team news

Summer signing Dominic Solanke isn’t expected back until after the international break, so Son Heung-min should lead the line. The Englishman is Tottenham’s only confirmed absentee, though. Postecoglou will be confident to have Destiny Udogie and Micky van de Ven back after slightly injury worries.

Wilson Odobert impressed against Everton and may keep his spot on the flank.

Newcastle vs Tottenham head-to-head

Each side has won three of the last six meetings in this fixture, but Newcastle’s victories have all come in the last four clashes. The last draw between these two was in April 2021.
