How both teams go into Newcastle vs Chelsea

Chelsea are enjoying life under Enzo Maresca right now. The Blues quickly bounced back from their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool — in which they played very well — by thrashing Panathinaikos 4-1 away from home in the Conference League. And even despite the loss at Anfield, they’re still well in the hunt for a Champions League spot, especially after beating Newcastle 2-1 in league play at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Things haven’t been quite as enjoyable for Newcastle, whose only win in their last six came against AFC Wimbledon of League Two. Injuries continue to plague the Magpies but they still have enough quality to cause anyone a problem on their day.

Newcastle team news

Both sides are likely to rotate their starting XIs after their weekend clash in the Premier League. Newcastle are without a host of key players, including Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.

Chelsea team news

Ben Chilwell is Chelsea’s only fitness doubt at the time of writing.

Newcastle vs Chelsea head-to-head

After going three games without victory against Newcastle, Chelsea have won their past three matches. Each of these victories came at Stamford Bridge last season — though one was on penalties in the EFL Cup.
