Netherlands vs Turkey Euro 2024 prediction: Can the Crescent-Stars cause another surprise?

Netherlands vs Turkey latest prediction

Netherlands got off to a mixed start at Euro 2024, with a fine comeback victory against Poland followed by a clean sheet in a goalless draw with France. However, a dramatic 3-2 loss to Austria left them going through as one of the best third-placed outfits. They made light work of their round of 16 tie, though, comfortably beating Romania 3-0 in a game where they showed just how dangerous they can be. An exceptionally bright spark has been Cody Gakpo, who has scored three goals in his four appearances so far.

Netherlands have progressed from five of their last seven major tournament quarter-finals. However, one of the two times they didn’t came last time out at the 2022 World Cup when they lost to Argentina on penalties. This is Oranje‘s first European Championship quarter-final since 2008 when they lost 3-1 to Russia.

Turkey started by winning one of the tournament’s most entertaining games, seeing off Georgia in Dortmund in a match that had everything. A defeat by Portugal in the same stadium followed, but Vincenzo Montella’s team managed to come through their third fixture against ten-man Czech Republic unscathed, winning late on through Cenk Tosun. Another thriller followed in the round of 16 in Leipzig, as two Merih Demiral goals and an astonishing last-gasp Mert Günok save earned Turkey a place in only their third European Championship quarter-final at the expense of Austria.

The Crescent-Stars have reached the quarter-finals of a major tournament for the fourth time, after Euro 2000, 2002 World Cup and Euro 2008. They reached the semi-finals of the latter two, failing only at Euro 2000 when they were beaten 2-0 by Portugal.

Netherlands and Turkey in the Euro 2024 quarter-final at 8pm on Saturday 6th July at Olympiastadion in Berlin.

This showdown will showcase two young forwards at different stages of their careers. Across the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, the only European player with more goals than the Netherlands’ Cody Gakpo’s six is Kylian Mbappé (9). All six of Gakpo’s strikes have come in different matches; the only Dutch players to score in more different games at major tournaments are Dennis Bergkamp (10), Robin van Persie (8), and Wesley Sneijder (7).

In Euro 2024, six teenagers have been given starts by Turkey, with three each for Kenan Yıldız and Arda Güler. This ties the record for the most starts given to teenagers in a single edition of the finals, a record previously held by Spain at Euro 2020 (six starts, all for Pedri). Notably, Arda Güler, who scored one goal and provided one assist, is one of only three teenagers to have achieved both a goal and an assist in a single European Championship tournament. The other two players who have accomplished this feat are Wayne Rooney (four goals, one assist) and Cristiano Ronaldo (two goals, two assists) at Euro 2004.

Netherlands latest team news

Gakpo has been a key player in Netherlands’ front six under manager Ronald Koeman’s experimentation during the tournament. Joey Veerman was substituted after just 33 minutes against Austria and has been replaced in the starting lineup by Tijjani Reijnders. Malen, who scored two goals against Romania, is expected to replace Steven Bergwijn.

In defence, Denzel Dumfries has secured his spot at right back, while Lutsharel Geertruida’s performance was not up to par when he replaced Dumfries against Austria, and the Dutch backline conceded three goals.

Turkey latest team news

Heading into the game against Austria, 10 players were at risk of suspension due to receiving yellow cards in their final group game against the Czech Republic. Orkun Kökçü and İsmail Yüksek were both booked in the Austria game and will miss the quarter-final.

Additionally, centre-back Merih Demiral, who scored both of Turkey’s goals in the previous round, is also suspended for making a political gesture after his second goal. However, previously suspended players will be available for the upcoming game against Netherlands, including captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu and defender Samet Akaydın — who will now replace Demiral.

Netherlands vs Turkey head-to-head

Netherlands holds the advantage in the all-time head-to-head record and defeated Turkey 6-1 during their last meeting in World Cup qualifying back in September 2021, with Memphis Depay scoring a hat trick.
