How both teams go into Netherlands vs Spain
It’s been a bit of a grind for the Netherlands since their run to the Euro 2024 semi-finals, winning just two of their six Uefa Nations League group matches. However, a 1-0 loss away against Germany was their only defeat, meaning they qualified for the quarter-finals in second place.
Spain, meanwhile, have built on their Euro 2024 triumph. La Roja drew 0-0 in Serbia in their first Nations League group match but since then, they’ve won five out of five to top their group, eight points clear of Denmark in second.
Netherlands team news
Netherlands are yet to announce their squad, although you can be sure Premier League stars like Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch, Matthijs de Ligt and Jurrien Timber will play key roles for Ronald Koeman.
Spain team news
Spain haven’t announced their squad, either, but should also feature plenty of Premier League stars, like David Raya, Marc Cucurella and Mikel Merino.
Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen represented the Netherlands from U16 to U19 level but now has seven U21 caps to his name for Spain, declaring that nation as his ‘home’. La Roja might be tempted to cap him here in order to stop the Netherlands from stealing the talented centre-half back.
Netherlands vs Spain head-to-head
As mentioned, Netherlands haven’t lost in normal time against Spain since 1983. However, their one overall defeat in that time was the famous 1-0 loss in extra-time in the 2010 World Cup final, when Andres Iniesta scored in the 116th minute after Arjen Robben had missed a huge chance.
