It’s been a long time since the Netherlands made waves at the European Championships. Between 1976 and 2004, they made at least the semi-finals in five of eight editions of this tournament, only failing to qualify once and even winning it in 1988. Since then, however, they’ve never made it past the quarter-finals and didn’t qualify at all in 2016.
However, there’s another exciting crop of Dutch talents emerging and after reaching the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup and only exiting to eventual winners Argentina on penalties, expectations have been raised.
The Netherlands are in good form with just one defeat from their last six matches, but face a tough group at the Euros containing France and two dark horses in Austria and Poland. This is their final test before them with plenty for Ronald Koeman still to figure out, including who is his best No.9 and how to balance the midfield.
