Netherlands vs France Euro 2024 predictions: Oranje seek revenge on Les Bleus with top spot on the line

Two teams looking to continue their perfect start in Euro 2024 will clash in Group D as France and the Netherlands lock horns.

Netherlands and France Euro 2024 Prediction:

Netherlands vs France Latest Prediction

When the groups were first drawn, many had this game as the decider for Group D and it’s looking like that will be the case. Both Netherlands and France won their opening game and know victory here could all but seal top spot. Netherlands go into the game in top spot having won their opening match against Poland 2-1, coming from behind thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst.

The win extended Netherlands’ winning run to four games across all competitions since their 2-1 loss to Germany in a friendly in March. Netherlands had a whopping 21 shots against Poland, their most in a single game at a major tournament since Euro 2012 when they had 32 against Denmark.

France, meanwhile, opened their tournament with a narrow 1-0 win over Austria. Among the favourites to win Euro 2024 this wasn’t a comfortable victory, with France largely frustrated by their lack of clinical finishing in front of goal. It took an own goal to give them the victory, with Max Wober putting into his own net after Kylian Mbappe’s cross.

Les Bleus posted an xG of 2.13 against Austria but hit the target with just three of their 14 shots, 12 of which came from inside the box. But all that matters was the victory, Didier Deschamps’ 100 as France manager, 59 more than any other manager has managed with the nation.

The showdown between Netherlands and France occurs on 21st June at Red Bull Arena, Leipzig.

France have won seven of their last eight games against Netherlands across all competitions, with the only exception a 2-0 loss in the UEFA Nations League in November 2018. But it doesn’t look like it will be that easy for them on Friday. As mentioned, France were very wasteful in front of goal against Austria, with just three shots on target from 14 total attempts.

Netherlands weren’t much better in their win over Poland. Roland Koeman’s side hit the target four times from 21 shots, with an xG of 1.46. Cody Gakpo was their main shooter with two shots on target from five efforts, the same number Marcus Thuram managed for France against Austria.

Netherlands Latest Team News

Koeman’s main challenge for this summer’s tournament is deciding on his starting lineup. He has used both a back-four and a back-three but preferred the latter, though he’s likely to retain the same starting XI from the Poland win, meaning Jeremie Frimpong will begin on the bench with Denzel Dumfries lining up at right-back. Memphis Depay should again lead the line despite Wout Weghorst’s heroics off the bench. The one-time Man Utd loanee’s four goals at major tournaments (World Cup/Euros) have come as a substitute, including his winner with his first touch against Poland in the opening game. It’s the most sub goals a Netherlands player has ever scored in major tournament history.

France Latest Team News

Kylian Mbappe came off in France’s win over Austria with a broken nose. Early reports suggested that the Real Madrid-bound forward would miss the match against Netherlands. However, Didier Deschamps has expressed optimism that Mbappe could be available, having returned to training in a protective mask. Netherlands are Mbappe’s favourite opponents, with the forward scoring six goals in five matches against the Dutch, more than he has managed against any other side in his international career. If he doesn’t make it, France’s all-time leading goalscorer, Olivier Giroud, is expected to replace him.

Netherlands vs France Head-to-Head

Two of Europe’s powerhouses have regularly met every decade since their first showdown in May 1908. This latest clash marks the fourth meeting under the UEFA European Championship banner. Apart from Portugal, no other nation has dominated the Dutch national team as much as the French. The Dutch have lost seven of their last eight meetings, including 4-0 losses. Both teams have faced each other 11 times in this century, and a standout moment for the Dutch was their memorable 4-1 victory at Euro 2008 against the two-time world champions.
