Road to Euro 2024 begins
Both nations are at Euro 2024 this summer, so this game will be a chance for the two managers to see where they are at ahead of the tournament.
Netherlands finished second in their qualifying group with 18 points from eight games, only losing twice to group winners France. The first defeat to France came as part of a tough start to 2023 for Netherlands, who also lost to Croatia and Italy in the UEFA Nations League semi-final and third-place play-off respectively.
This current international break will also see Netherlands take on Euro 2024 hosts Germany in Frankfurt, in what is Ronald Koeman’s last chance to really look at his squad. There will be a reunion with France at Euro 2024, with Netherlands also facing Austria and one of Poland, Estonia, Wales or Finland.
Scotland, meanwhile, finished runners-up in Group A and actually led for a while. In the end, they won five, drew two and lost once, beaten by Spain whom they did also beat early in qualifying. That was part of a great start to 2023, with Scotland winning each of their first five matches.
However, Steve Clarke’s men do go into this game in a bit of poor form. They lost three in a row against England, Spain and France, before drawing against Georgia and Norway to end Euro 2024 qualifying. So now it’s about getting back on track ahead of the Euros, where Scotland will face hosts Germany in the opening game of the tournament, as well as Switzerland and Hungary.
