The Netherlands will aim to break a nearly four-decade drought for an international title at Euro 2024 this summer. During the last pan-European tournament, the Dutch team was disappointed to be eliminated shortly after advancing from the group stage. Frank de Boer was replaced as head coach, and Louis van Gaal returned to guide the Netherlands to a quarter-final exit at the recent World Cup finals. There’s a feeling of familiarity with Ronald Koeman now following in Van Gaal’s footsteps. Although the Dutch team has several well-known players who can come together to form a strong team, their performance remains unpredictable.

France, meanwhile, is seeking a third European Championship trophy at Euro 2024 this summer. After a disappointing Euro 2020 campaign, where Switzerland eliminated them in the last 16, and a World Cup final loss to Argentina in Qatar in 2022, Didier Deschamps will be looking for his French side to bounce back and win in Germany.

They are considered one of the favourites to win Euro 2024, just behind England in the outright market. With players like Kylian Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann, and a promising group of young talents, they are expected to go far in the competition. Many believe they have a good chance of matching Italy and Germany’s record as the most successful countries in the competition’s history, with three European Championship trophies.

Both teams know that the best third-placed teams will advance to the knockout stages. If one team loses, they will remain optimistic, as there is still a chance to advance.

Netherlands Latest Team News

Koeman’s main challenge for this summer’s tournament is deciding on his starting lineup. He has used both a back-four and a back-three but prefers the latter. This approach makes sense, given the Dutch team’s defensive strength. Frenkie de Jong will start in the heart of the Netherlands’ midfield, and Memphis Depay is expected to lead the attack for Oranje.

France Latest Team News

Didier Deschamps has settled on a 4-2-3-1 formation for France, with Tchouaméni playing a key role in linking defence and attack. In the attacking line-up, Olivier Giroud leads the front with Antoine Griezmann behind him and Ousmane Dembélé on the right wing. Benjamin Pavard and Jules Koundé compete for the right-back spot, allowing Theo Hernandez to support the attack from the left.

Netherlands vs France Head-to-Head

Two of Europe’s powerhouses have regularly met every decade since their first showdown in May 1908. This latest clash marks the fourth meeting under the UEFA European Championship banner. Apart from Portugal, no other nation has dominated the Dutch national team as much as the French. The Dutch have lost seven of their last eight meetings, including 4-0 losses. Both teams have faced each other 11 times in this century, and a standout moment for the Dutch was their memorable 4-1 victory at Euro 2008 against the two-time world champions.
