Ruben Loftus Cheek making a surprise England bid?
Ruben Loftus-Cheek hasn’t played for England since his 20-minute cameo in a 3-0 friendly win over the United States in November 2018. That absence has been largely thanks to a combination of injury problems and struggling to properly settle at club level.
That all appears to be changing now. Loftus-Cheek made a surprise switch to Italian giants AC Milan last summer and has quite simply never looked back.
Loftus-Cheek has seven goals to his name in 27 appearances across all competitions since joining Stefano Pioli’s men, but it’s his recent form that has really caught the eye. Six of the 27-year-old’s seven goals have come in his last eight appearances and, as mentioned, four of them have been Milan’s opening goal of the match. Even in one of the games in that run where he didn’t score — a 1-0 win over champions Napoli — Loftus-Cheek created two chances and had five touches in the opposition box, continuing to exude a massive influence over the Milan attack.
Former England international midfielder Owen Hargreaves sang the praises of Loftus-Cheek following his two-goal showing in Milan’s 3-0 Europa League win over Rennes on Thursday. Hargreaves, of course, knows all about the benefits of playing outside of England given he enjoyed his best years in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.
“Just looking at it, I can’t believe Ruben Loftus-Cheek is 28 already,” Hargreaves told TNT Sports. “I know he’s always been a star as a young man but he probably should have made this move (abroad) a little bit sooner.
“He’s such a talented guy. Probably played a little bit deeper at times. This is where he’s at his absolute best, arriving in the box with his size. He’s a good header of the ball. He’s got goals in him.
“It shows he’s in a really good place, in a team that plays to his strengths. And he’s scoring goals. That one (the second goal), he’s a little bit fortunate, it arrives to him.
“I think the confidence has grown. We’ve always known that he’s such a talented player, he’s obviously not a boy anymore, 28, he should be at his absolute best.”

On playing abroad, Hargreaves added: “I just think there’s less noise around you (abroad). You know when you’ve got your friends and family around you, everyone is on you. Sometimes you just want to focus on the football, but you can’t if you’re in your home town.
“There he’ll probably be able to focus on his craft, learn a new language, learn a new culture.
“I would advise it to every player – leave your comfort zone and go play somewhere else, just even for a few years. I just think you learn so much.”
Loftus-Cheek is a play Gareth Southgate clearly likes, so he’ll certainly fancy his chances of sneaking into England’s squad for the upcoming European Championships.
