How both teams go into Man Utd vs Real Sociedad

Despite their inconsistent domestic form, Manchester United are considered among the favourites to win this season’s Europa League, with only Lazio and Tottenham ranked higher by bookmakers. United finished the league phase with the third-best record, winning their last five matches after drawing their opening three. They were also the only team to remain unbeaten. However, their inconsistency at home has affected their European performance. After taking the lead in Donostia-San Sebastián through Joshua Zirkzee, they allowed Real Sociedad to equalise with Mikel Oyarzabal converting a penalty.

Imanol Alguacil’s men will be optimistic about their chances in the return leg at Old Trafford. La Real finished 13th in the league phase table, entering the playoffs where they comfortably defeated Danish club Midtjylland with a 7-3 aggregate score. It’s also worth noting that United’s only home defeat across their last 28 Europa League matches at Old Trafford (W21 D6) was against Real Sociedad in September 2022. In the knockout stages, they are unbeaten in 15 (W10 D5) since losing 3-2 to Marcelo Bielsa’s Athletic Club in March 2012.
