How both teams go into Man United vs Leicester City
As Manchester United prepared for their highly anticipated third-round clash with Arsenal, it was evident that the team was struggling, losing four consecutive matches across all competitions. This included a bizarre 4-3 defeat against Tottenham in the EFL Cup. However, they managed to regain some confidence with a morale-boosting 2-2 draw against Liverpool away from home. United brought that momentum into the Emirates Stadium, where Bruno Fernandes gave them the lead in the 52nd minute.
Just as United seemed to be gaining a stranglehold, Diogo Dalot received a second yellow card, leaving them with ten men. Arsenal quickly capitalised on this advantage, with Gabriel equalising from the free-kick awarded for the foul. Martin Ødegaard then dramatically missed a penalty, while the much-criticised Altay Bayındır turned from zero to hero by making a crucial save. With United reduced to ten men for an hour—including all of the extra time—a penalty shootout was needed to determine the winner. In the shootout, Kai Havertz became the only player to miss a spot-kick, allowing the defending champions to advance to the fourth round.
On the other side, head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy has had a tough time since taking charge of relegation-threatened Leicester City. When the two sides met, Leicester had experienced a series of disappointing results. They began with a 3-1 win over West Ham, followed by a 2-2 draw with Brighton, but then faced five consecutive league defeats. A glimmer of hope came in the FA Cup when they crushed QPR 6-2, with James Justin scoring twice. At one point during that match, the score was tied at 1-1, and Leicester even held a narrow 3-2 lead.
