Man Utd vs Barnsley prediction and stats: Will Red Devils avoid upset?

Manchester United get their latest quest for glory underway with an EFL Cup third round tie against Barnsley on Tuesday.

The Red Devils won the FA Cup last season, adding to their EFL Cup success the year before. But last season in the EFL Cup they exited in the fourth round.

Three Man Utd vs Barnsley predictions

Man Utd 3-1 Barnsley (10/1 with BoyleSports)

Man Utd haven’t lost to lower league opposition in the EFL Cup since their penalty-shootout defeat to Derby County in September 2018. They’ve knocked out five lower league sides in that time.

Marcus Rashford to score anytime (23/20 with Midnite)

Marcus Rashford got off the mark at the weekend and will carry momentum into this match. The Englishman also has a good record in the EFL Cup, scoring 14 goals — the joint-most of any Man Utd player in the competition’s history.

Both Teams To Score (23/20 with BetGoodwin)

Barnsley have scored in eight of their nine games across all competitions this season, while Man Utd have conceded in three of their five.

How to watch Man Utd vs Barnsley live

Man Utd vs Barnsley is scheduled for 8pm on Tuesday 17th September and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football.

How both teams go into Man Utd vs Barnsley

Erik ten Hag has had cup success in each of his past two seasons at Man Utd, but it feels like the pressure hasn’t been higher. The Dutchman saved his job by winning the FA Cup last season, and the Red Devils have started the new season poorly. Despite winning at the weekend, Man Utd have lost two of their four league games so far as well as the Community Shield.

The EFL Cup win in 2022/23 ended a six-year wait for a trophy, after scooping the EFL Cup and Europa League in 2016/17. Man Utd have won the EFL Cup six times so far, the third-most successful side in the competition’s history. But last season their defence ended in the fourth round, as they were knocked out by Newcastle United.

Since the EFL Cup started in 1960/61, Barnsley have only made it past the third round six times. Three of those came in successive seasons between 1980 and 1983 with a quarter-final run sandwiched by two fourth-round exits.

Barnsley last reached the fourth round in 2009/10, but have only made it the third round three times since. That includes this season. The Tykes beat Wigan Athletic on penalties in the first round before knocking out Sheffield United last time out.

Man Utd host Barnsley at Old Trafford on Tuesday 17th September at 8pm.

Man Utd team news

Ten Hag has confirmed that Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez are all available to play after picking up knocks at the weekend. Luke Shaw is making good progress on his return from injury but isn’t available just yet. Rasmus Hojlund, Leny Yoro, Tyrell Malacia, Victor Lindelof and Mason Mount are all injured.

Barnsley team news

Barnsley manager Darrell Clarke has confirmed he will rotate slightly for this game. Donovan Pines is out due to concussion protocol after his eye injury at the weekend. Fabio Jalo is out injured.

Man Utd vs Barnsley head-to-head

Man Utd have won 22 of their 38 games against Barnsley in history, including their past two meetings. However, they have only faced off once in the 21st century.
