Man United vs Chelsea prediction, odds, tips & team news: Best bets for Super Sunday at Old Trafford

Man United vs Chelsea prediction, stats, tips & team news

Manchester United will play their first Premier League game without Erik ten Hag on Sunday when they take on Chelsea at Old Trafford. Dean Woodward is on hand to preview the action and provide us with his best bets.

The news was announced earlier this week that Erik ten Hag had been relieved of his duties, with Ruud van Nistelrooy taking temporary charge of the side. Chelsea sit nine places ahead of United in the top-flight table heading into the weekend and are looking to make it six wins from their first ten matches under their new boss.

Matthis de Ligt over 0.5 fouls & Moises Caicedo over 0.5 fouls  (10/11 with bet365)

It’s hard to predict exactly what changes Ruud will make with temporary control over this United side, but it’s likely de Ligt will start as the right-sided centre-back on Sunday evening, where he will have to deal with a thriving Nicolas Jackson.

If it wasn’t for being overshadowed by his teammate Cole Palmer, who has been sensational yet again, more people would be talking about the Senegalese forward Jackson, who has looked like the complete striker this season. His hold-up and linkup play has been class, with regularly finding the next. De Ligt will be up against it on Sunday and Jackson has drawn a lot of fouls since joining Chelsea, with twenty-eight in his last twenty-one games. I expect these two to engage in plenty of duels.

De Ligt has looked super aggressive in that back line for United. When the opposition striker takes the ball to his feet, he tries to get to them quickly and prevent them from turning. This has resulted in him fouling in eight of his last nine games, a trend I expect to continue with Jackson in his channels.

Caicedo makes this double close to even money, and he’s just a foul machine. He has committed a foul in twenty-five of his last twenty-nine games, a foul in all of his last eight, and an average of 1.89 fouls per 90 minutes this season for Chelsea.

De Ligt to foul Jackson & Jackson to foul De Ligt (12/1 with Paddy Power)

Jackson, along with being fouled often, isn’t shy of committing fouls, averaging 1.12 per 90 this season. He has made a foul in four of his last five in all competitions, and with plenty of duels expected with de Ligt, this could be a lovely price.

The Manchester United defender is surprisingly good at winning free kicks, too. He has drawn nine fouls in his last eleven games in all competitions, with a foul drawn in five of his last eight for United. These are not exceptional numbers, but at 12/1, I think these two could be on each other’s toes all game.

This is a matchup between two sides who are feeling very different about their seasons so far.

For Man United, it’s been a disappointment. The Red Devils have underwhelmed with just three wins from their opening nine games, leaving them 14th in the standings.

It’s now over a year since United last won in Europe, and the defeat to West Ham last weekend proved to be the final straw for Erik ten Hag, who, despite winning two trophies, endured a turbulent time throughout at Old Trafford.

Whisper it quietly, but Chelsea are looking very good this season and have certainly surprised a few pundits since their pre-season predictions. The Blues were beaten in the EFL Cup on the road at Newcastle midweek, but Enzo Maresca decided to make wholesale changes, using the incredible squad depth that he has at his disposal. Chelsea sit fifth in the table, just six points off the summit. However, bookmakers are struggling to split the pair on Sunday, with both being priced around 13/8 for the win.

Man United team news

Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia, Leny Yoro, Antony, and Kobbie Mainoo are all confirmed absentees for Sunday. Christian Eriksen’s fitness remains uncertain after he pulled out of the matchday squad prior to the EFL Cup game with Leicester.

Chelsea team news

Chelsea are much more fortunate on the injury front, with only Omari Kellyman sidelined. Jadon Sancho is ineligible to play against his parent club, while Romeo Lavia is expected to partner Moises Caicedo in the engine room for the visitors.

Man United vs Chelsea head-to-head

Chelsea’s dramatic 4-3 win in April ended a run of seven games without victory over Man United across all competitions. In the Premier League, that run extended to 12 matches.
