Manchester City will be hoping to close the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool this weekend. The weirdness of the Premier League’s “winter break” means that Man City play a week before Liverpool, but they’ll no doubt relish having the opportunity to keep their momentum up. After a rough run of fixtures, Man City have won three of their past four league games, beating Luton, Everton and Sheffield United. The only anomaly was a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace in which two points were dropped due to a late penalty.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have slipped down the Premier League table and now sit 11 points outside the top four. The Magpies were among the favourites to qualify for Champions League football come the end of the campaign, but now they look in the wilderness. In fact, Eddie Howe’s men are just one point above the bottom half. Newcastle have lost five of their last six Premier League games, having beaten Chelsea and Manchester United back-to-back. The only victory in that run was a 3-0 win over Fulham, at St James’ Park and it doesn’t get any easier.

Eddie Howe has never won a Premier League game against Pep Guardiola and there isn’t any better time to end his unwanted record against the Spaniard than this weekend. Infact, Man City have won more games (30), scored more goals (98) and kept more clean sheets (22) vs. Newcastle than any other side that have faced in the competition’s history, winning 25 of the last 30 league meetings between the two sides. They did beat Man City 1-0 at St. James’ Park in the EFL Cup earlier this season however and a win here would not only end Eddie Howe’s curse against Pep, but it would make him the first Newcastle manager in 40 years to beat Man City twice in the same season.

Man City to win, BTTS and Bruno Guimaraes to be carded

Newcastle may have won the most recent meeting, in the EFL Cup, but this is a fixture that Man City dominate with eight wins from the past 11. However, Man City haven’t been the strongest defensively of late, conceding in eight of their past nine matches. Bruno Guimaraes leads the way in the Premier League for yellow cards this season, with no player receiving more than his eight.
