Man City vs Liverpool prediction, stats, tips & team news

Liverpool‘s Premier League title quest takes them to the home of the defending champions when they face Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday 23rd January at 4:30pm.

Man City’s title defence is over, with Pep Guardiola’s side now chasing a top-four finish. Liverpool, meanwhile, would strike a huge blow to their rivals with a win here. This game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Premier League.

Mo Salah to score anytime, over 1.5 Liverpool goals and over 6.5 Man City corners (13/2 with BoyleSports)

Liverpool may have dropped points against Aston Villa in midweek, but they continued an impressive scoring record. The Reds have now scored at least to goals in 11 of their 13 Premier League away games this season. Mo Salah scored and assisted at Villa Park, and has been directly involved in a goal in each of his past four league visits to the Etihad. Man City will look to hurt Liverpool from corners, having had at least seven corners in all but one of their home league games this season.

How both teams go into Man City vs Liverpool

Man City are out of the title race, but they can still have a big influence. The Citizens sit fourth after 25 games, but are only one point clear of fifth-placed Bournemouth. They dragged themselves back into the Champions League places after a strong run of results, before being brought back down to earth with a thud in their 5-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates. And it’s been a strange week for Man City, with a Champions League exit at the hands of Real Madrid coming either side of a 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle United.

Things are about to get busy for Liverpool. They have the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle in March, and return to Champions League action with Paris Saint-Germain their last 16 opponents. But first they’ll want to tighten their grip on the Premier League title race. The Reds have dropped points in two of their past three games, but remain on a long unbeaten run. Liverpool go into the weekend eight points clear at the top, albeit having played a game more than their rivals.

Man City team news

John Stones had to come off injury in Man City’s Champions League defeat to Real Madrid, so will miss out here. Erling Haaland was an unused substitute with a knock, and faces a late fitness test. Manuel Akanji, Oscar Bobb and Rodri are longer-term absentees.

Liverpool team news

Cody Gakpo is a doubt for Liverpool having missed the draw with Aston Villa. Conor Bradley came off the bench to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in that came, but had to be taken off after 23 minutes due to injury. He won’t feature, while Joe Gomez underwent surgery on a hamstring injury and won’t be back until May.

Man City vs Liverpool head-to-head

Liverpool are unbeaten in their past three games against Man City. But they haven’t won a Premier League game at the Etihad since November 2015.
