Lyon vs Man Utd prediction, stats, tips & team news

Manchester United continue their quest for Europa League glory when they travel to Lyon in the first leg of their quarter-final clash on Thursday, 10th April, at 8pm (UK time). We’ve previewed the action and picked out our best bets, which includes a 20/1 Bet Builder with Sky Bet.

Bruno Fernandes 1+ Shot on Target & To Win 1+ Foul (11/10 with Sky Bet)

Bruno Fernandes has been the standout performer in what has been a difficult season for Manchester United. Some of his best performances have arrived in the Europa League with four goals in the competition, including a hat-trick in the win over Real Sociedad in the last-16. Fernandes averages 3.2 shots per game in this competition and this bet of him to record a shot on target and be fouled has landed in four of his last six. Lyon will know the threat he possesses and I expect Fernandes to be fouled on numerous occasions.

Manuel Ugarte and Ainsley Maitland-Niles to be Carded (20/1 with Sky Bet)

Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg takes the whistle for this clash, who averages a healthy 5.8 cards per game across his last five matches, and I’ve picked out two players I like the look of to find the way into the book. The first of those is Manuel Ugarte who has more cards than any other player for Manchester United in the Premier League this season. The Uruguayan averages 0.5 cards per 90 minutes and he makes plenty of appeal here in a game where he could rack up the fouls.

The second player on my radar is former Arsenal man Ainsley Maitland-Niles. The 27-year-old has been booked twice in eight Europa League outings this term and at 7/1 as a single, he looks a little overpriced in a game of such magnitude to both sides.

How both teams go into Lyon vs Man Utd

For all the upheaval on the pitch, Lyon have been excellent on it this season. The French side have won eight of their last ten matches across all competitions, with a narrow 3-2 defeat against runaway Ligue 1 champions PSG and a 4-2 away loss against Strasbourg the only marks on their copybook during that time. Lyon finished sixth in the league phase, losing just one of their eight matches before brushing aside FCSB 7-1 on aggregate.

Man Utd’s turbulent season has been more relevant than ever of late in the Premier League with three losses, three draws and three wins across their last eight. In the Europa League, they have performed well, thrashing Real Sociedad 5-2 on aggregate in the last-16 to reach this stage. After crashing out of the FA Cup on penalties and finding themselves 13th in the Premier League, there is huge pressure on Ruben Amorim’s players to deliver here, with the Europa League now the difference between a complete failure of a campaign or optimism going into next season.

Lyon team news

Lyon have suffered a major setback for this game with winger Ernest Nuamah suffering an ACL injury against Lyon last weekend. Nemanja Matic is expected to start against his former club, but Alexandre Lacazette may have to settle for a place on the bench, with Georges Mikautadze expected to start up top.

Man Utd team news

Amad Diallo and Lisandro Martinez are out for the season. Luke Shaw is now available, but Patrick Dorgu is expected to continue at left-back. Ayden Heaven is a confirmed absentee, while Matthijs de Ligt and Kobbie Mainoo will be assessed before kick-off.

Lyon vs Man Utd head-to-head

These two sides have only met four times competitively previously, with United winning twice and the other two ending in a draw. The last meeting came back in March 2008, when Cristiano Ronaldo scored to seal a 2-1 aggregate win in the Champions League round-of-16 — en route to the Red Devils winning the competition for the third and most recent time.
