  • Phil Foden has scored two goals in the FA Cup this season.

Underwhelming Man City still on for Treble

Man City are unbeaten in their past 17 games across all competitions, since a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League at the start of December. Fifteen of those 17 games have ended in victory, with only Crystal Palace and Chelsea managing to hold the Citizens. That run has seen them reach the fifth round of the FA Cup, hold a solid lead in the Champions League last 16, stay one point behind Premier League leaders Liverpool and win the Club World Cup.

However, Man City haven’t been as flash as we’ve come to know recently. Since their 3-1 win over FC Copenhagen in the first leg of the Champions League last 16, Man City have scored just three goals in three games. It started with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea, before Man City eked out 1-0 victories over Brentford and Bournemouth respectively. In the second half of their game against Bournemouth, Man City were fortunate not to lose their lead, with the Cherries having nine shots for an xG of 0.79 — compared to Man City’s six shots and xG of 0.29.

While it may be worrying for some Man City fans to see Pep Guardiola’s side not in the best form, it is often the sign of champions. Because all that matters for Man City is that they are winning these games without being at their best. It’s a run that will help them in the Premier League, but could cause problems in a one-off game in the FA Cup.

Luton have already given Man City problems at Kenilworth Road too. Although Man City left with a 2-1 league win earlier in the season, Luton did take the lead just before half-time. The Hatters have also caused Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle, Chelsea and Man Utd problems — though crucially they lost three of those games.

Luton vs Man City match tip

Phil Foden to score anytime @ 2/1 by Sky Bet

Erling Haaland is always the go-to for scoring when it comes to Man City games, but it still doesn’t feel like he’s fully fit after returning from injury. That will come, but recently Man City have done okay without him, thanks to the form of Phil Foden. There have been games this season where Foden has pulled Man City through, including at the weekend against Bournemouth when he scored the only goal. Foden also scored twice in the third round of the FA Cup as Man City beat Huddersfield 5-0, the only player with more than one goal for the club in the competition so far this season.

*Odds correct as of 08:15 on February 27. 18+ only. GambleAware.

As you’d expect, Man City are still heavy favourites for this game. They haven’t lost against Luton in their past nine meetings, though only one of those came this century. The Citizens are also unbeaten in 17 games across all competitions, winning 15. However, it is worth remembering that from the fifth round onwards there will be no FA Cup replays. So there is the chance that this one could go all the way to penalties on the night.
