Before the season started, Luton were among the favourites to be relegated from the Premier League and that was looking more likely in recent weeks after a three-game losing streak to start December. However, the Hatters have turned things around slightly to string together two consecutive victories. Newcastle were the first to fall in a shock 1-0 win for the Hatters, who then beat relegation rivals Sheffield United 3-2 in midweek, thanks to two own goals. The wins leave Luton now just a point from safety, closing the gap on Everton who have stuttered.

Chelsea, meanwhile, will be hoping to put 2023 behind them but not without another potential victory. The Blues are 10th at the halfway point of the 2023/24 season, still closer to the relegation zone than they are the top four — 10 points to 12. They’ve been suffering recently too, losing back-to-back game against Manchester United and Everton, just when they had threatened to find some form. The rot was stopped with a win against Sheffield United, but the Blues fell back to losing ways in defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day. In midweek, Chelsea did seal just a sixth home league victory of the year, so now they’ll be hoping for another win to close 2023.

Luton vs Chelsea match tip

Raheem Sterling anytime goalscorer @ 15/8 with Bet365

Raheem Sterling missed Chelsea’s win over Crystal Palace through suspension but will be back here, hoping to continue his fine record against promoted sides. The Englishman has been involved in 20 goals in his last 19 Premier League appearances against promoted sides, scoring 15 and assisting five, most recently setting up Cole Palmer’s opener against Sheffield United. Three of his five league goals this season (60%) have come against such clubs, including a brace the last time he faced Luton.

Over 2.5 Chelsea cards, under 2.5 Luton cards

Chelsea remain the joint-worst team in the Premier League this season for discipline, averaging 3.27 cards per game. Although they have been overtaken by Sheffield United for yellow cards alone (3.16 to 3.11), Chelsea’s red card average brings them back level. Against Crystal Palace last time our there were three cards for Chelsea players as well as one for Mauricio Pochettino. By contrast, Luton are one of the best-behaved teams in the Premier League with an average of 1.89 cards per match. Only Arsenal (1.61) average fewer cards per game in the Premier League this season than the Hatters.
