Newcastle finally ended a four-game losing streak in the Premier League in midweek. The Magpies will still harbour hopes of a top-four finish after securing one last season, but a disastrous run saw them slip down the table. On top of losing four in a row, the Magpies also lost six out of seven Premier League games, only managing to beat Fulham. Low expectations were going into the trip to Villa Park too, but they ended Aston Villa’s long unbeaten home record with a 3-1 victory, lifting themselves to seventh.
Luton was also celebrating a big win in midweek, moving out of the relegation zone. The Hatters had been predicted to struggle in the Premier League this season, and that has been the case, with just 19 points from their opening 21 games. On either side of Christmas, there was a decent run of back-to-back wins against Newcastle and Sheffield United. However, they followed that up, defeating Chelsea and drawing with Burnley. But midweek, they thrashed Brighton 4-0 to move one point clear of Everton, with a game in hand on the Toffees and other teams around them.
