Mohamed Salah to cause more problems for Pep Guardiola or can they end Virgil van Dijk’s streak?
Mohamed Salah just loves playing the two Manchester sides.
The Egyptian has scored 23 goals in 33 appearances against Manchester United (12) and Manchester City (11) across all competitions and is the only player to score 10+ goals vs sides managed by Pep Guardiola during his managerial career. Even better than that, Salah has an incredible record against them at Anfield, scoring five goals and providing a further three assists in just six appearances. With his goal in this exact fixture last season, Salah became just the second player in Premier League history to score in four consecutive home games against the Citizens.
If City are going to become the first side to leave Anfield with three points across all competitions this season, then not only do they have to stop Mohamed Salah at one end, they have to do something even more difficult at the other and beat Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool’s centre-back, fresh from his MOTM performance and winning goal against Chelsea in the League Cup final at Wembley, returns to Anfield having played 93 Premier League matches on his home ground, losing just one. The 32-year-old has kept 46 clean sheets during that time and has looked back to his best this campaign, winning more aerial duels than any other Premier League player so far in 2023/24 whilst also boasting the best aerial duel win % for any player to contest 50+ aerial duels this season. In February alone, the Dutchman contested 21 aerial duels and won every single one of them.
However, Man City have the incredible Erling Haaland, who has now scored against every single side he has faced during his time in the Premier League. The Norwegian has also recently been reunited with City’s assist king Kevin De Bruyne, which spells even worse news for the opposition with the Belgian providing 16 assists for Erling Haaland in all competitions, the most of any Premier League player for a specific teammate since the start of last season.
Since his return from injury, De Bruyne has scored two goals and provided 10 assists in 11 appearances and it’s like he’s never been away. Even more bad news for Jürgen Klopp is just like Salah loves playing Man City, Kevin De Bruyne loves playing against Liverpool. The Belgian has made 12 Premier League appearances against the Reds and has been directly involved in 10 goals (4 goals, 6 assists) including a goal and an assist in his previous league game against them.
As well as Virgil van Dijk’s incredible record at Anfield, there is also a Man City player looking to hang on to another unbeaten streak. It has now been 60 matches across all competitions since Rodri last tasted defeat in a Manchester City shirt and he will be hoping that continues at Anfield, with a draw being enough to keep both Virgil van Dijk and the Spaniard happy.

Liverpool vs Man City match tip
BTTS & Draw @ 7/2 with BetVictor
Liverpool and Man City have played out some classic encounters in recent seasons, with both teams finding the back of the net in nine of the last 10 Premier League matches between the two sides. This season, both teams have drawn four games apiece against fellow ‘Big Six’ sides including the 1-1 draw between the two back in November.
With Liverpool unbeaten at home and Virgil van Dijk losing just one of his 93 Premier League matches at Anfield, then a point for City may not be the worst result as both sides continue to fight for the Premier League title.
Liverpool vs Man City odds
Man City are favourites despite Liverpool currently being on a 23-game unbeaten run at Anfield across all competitions this season. Liverpool have won their last two home games against City, but these two sides played out a 1-1 in the reverse fixture back in November.
In such a crucial game, the draw seems like value, especially with Man City winning just one of their six Premier League matches against ‘Big Six’ sides so far this season (W1 D4 L1).

Both Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah made their returns from injury in the Europa League win over Sparta Prague. Nunez started the game and played 51 minutes, while Salah came off the bench for just over 15. However, the Reds do still have injury issues.
Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Stefan Bajcetic are all out until after the international break, while Liverpool fans will likely have to wait a little longer for the likes of Thiago, Diogo Jota and Alisson. Joel Matip is a long-term absentee.
