A key weekend for Liverpool

This could be a defining weekend in Liverpool’s season. The Reds go into the weekend second in the Premier League, only behind Arsenal on goal difference. They secured this place with their 1-1 draw against Manchester City before the international break. And now they have a chance to put pressure on both Arsenal and Man City.

On a normal weekend, Liverpool would have the benefit of playing first of the title rivals, in the early kick-off on Sunday. But this weekend, it’s different. Because Liverpool know at least one of their title rivals will drop points, as Man City host Arsenal.

The Reds go into this weekend in a good position, unbeaten in their past five since a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal at the start of February. They won four games in a row, beating Burnley, Brentford, Luton and Nottingham Forest before their draw with Man City. Liverpool do have the more favourable fixture list of the title challengers too and have been given a 35.54% of winning the league by Opta’s season predictions model.

Brighton, meanwhile, are fighting for Europe. The Seagulls have been dumped out of the Europa League, knocked out by Roma in the last 16, losing 4-1 on aggregate. So now they will hope to secure a return to the competition, or at least the Europa Conference League.

After a tough start to the season, they are in a decent position. Brighton are eighth, just two points behind West Ham with a game in hand over the Hammers. At the moment, sixth is the threshold for European qualification, but if Man City or Man Utd win the FA Cup, that would drop down to seventh. Eighth may also be enough if England secure a fifth Champions League spot. But Brighton are in indifferent form, with three wins, two defeats and one draw from their past six games.

Liverpool vs Brighton match tip

Over 2.5 Liverpool goals @ 10/11 by BetMGM

Liverpool remain unbeaten at Anfield across all competitions this season, and they have been generous in providing goals for their home fans. The Reds have played 23 home games so far this season, and have scored at least three goals in 17 of them. More recently, Liverpool have scored at least three goals in six of their past seven home games, only failing in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their past 31 games at Anfield across all competitions, since a 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid in February 2023 — when they led 2-0 before crumbling. That alone would influence the odds in Liverpool’s favour, but Brighton’s own away form is also a factor. The Seagulls have lost five of their past six away games across all competitions, conceding seven in the past two against Fulham (three) and Roma (four). Even after the international break, it’s hard to see anything other than a Liverpool win.
