Leicester vs Tottenham prediction: Foxes mark return to Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to get the second season of Ange Postecogou off to a winning start when they travel to face Leicester City on the opening weekend.

Spurs will be hoping to replicate the start they made last season under Postecoglou. But can the Foxes mark their return to the top flight with a win and make it back-to-back victories over Tottenham for the first time since 1999?

How to watch Leicester vs Tottenham live

This game will be broadcast live on Monday 19th August at 8pm (UK time) on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League.

Three predictions for Leicester vs Tottenham

Leicester 2-3 Tottenham (15/1 with Betano)

Of all Premier League fixtures to have been played at least 30 times, Leicester against Tottenham has the highest goals-per-game average (3.8 – 128 goals in 34 games). There have been 28 goals scored in the last five meetings between the sides alone (5.6 per game), with Tottenham winning four of the previous five encounters.

Son Heung-min First Goalscorer (22/5 with Betano)

Although Leicester’s arch nemesis Harry Kane is no longer a Tottenham player, they still have Son Heung-min who has scored 10 goals in just 16 appearances against the Foxes. The South Korean has only scored more goals in his career against Southampton (12) and will be hoping to add to his already impressive total against Leicester on the opening day.

He has scored five and assisted once in his last three matches against the Foxes.

BTTS (1/2 with Betano)

One of Tottenham’s problems last season was their defence. Postecoglou’s side conceded in 31 of their 38 Premier League games last season, with four clean sheets in 19 matches away from home.

The 2024/25 Premier League campaign is here and it will once again involve Leicester. The Foxes are one of just two Premier League champions to have been relegated after lifting the trophy, though there were seven years between the high and low. Enzo Maresca was the man in charge for Leicester’s promotion campaign, but there is a new face at the helm.

With Maresca taking over at Chelsea, Steve Cooper is now the Leicester manager, given the job of ensuring the Foxes become Premier League regulars again. He has had to deal with the departure of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, but Leicester have done well to keep hold of their major players so far, while also adding depth to the squad.

For Tottenham, this is a chance for Postecoglou to continue his growth as manager. The Australian started life well in North London but Tottenham eventually fell away, having to settle for a fifth-placed finish. They were two points off fourth-placed Aston Villa, losing three of their final five matches.

This feels like an important summer for Postecoglou to reshape his squad, making sure every player is signing from the same hymn sheet. Eric Dier, Tanguy Ndombele, Japhet Tanganga, Ryan Sessegnon and Ivan Perisic have all been allowed to leave, whether released or sold, while Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Dominic Solanke have all been added to the squad.

Leicester host Tottenham at the King Power Stadium on Monday 19th August at 8pm (UK time).

Leicester team news

With a new manager, it will be interesting to see how Leicester line up, though Cooper looks set on a 4-2-3-1 formation. The biggest question will be who will get the nod up top with Jamie Vardy injured, with Tom Cannon looking the most likely as Patson Daka is a doubt. Facundo Buonanotte should go straight into the XI after joining on loan from Brighton, but Bobby De Cordova-Reid may have to make do with a place on the bench. Harry Winks faces his former side.

Tottenham team news

Club record signing Dominic Solanke should go straight into the starting XI if he can overcome a small injury. Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray may have to make do with a place on the bench, however.

Yves Bissouma has been suspended by Tottenham for Monday night’s game, so Rodrigo Bentancur should start in the six alongside Pape Sarr. Richarlison has returned to the squad, but is not fit enough to be involved from the start.

Destiny Udogie should be fit to start for the first time since mid-April.

Leicester vs Tottenham head-to-head

Leicester won the most recent meeting between these two sides, smashing Tottenham 4-1 in February 2023. That was revenge for Tottenham’s 6-2 victory earlier in the campaign. Overall Tottenham have dominated this fixture of late, with eight wins from the past 11 meetings.
