It’s been a season of unrest at both the London Stadium and Elland Road this term, with West Ham and Leeds flirting with relegation for much of the campaign — but as we approach the penultimate round it is the club who have stuck by their man who appear of out danger.
When West Ham were at their lowest ebb and stuck in the relegation mud, the board refused to give up on David Moyes, who has since guided the club to safety in all but mathematical confirmation. To complement his survival exploits, the club are also in the Europa Conference League semi-finals.
Leeds meanwhile are onto their third manager of the season after casting aside both Jesse Marsch and Javi Gracia. Firefighter Sam Allardyce has been parachuted in to try and work his magic, and already, he has claimed a big result against Newcastle to give them some momentum heading to the capital.
However, Big Sam is winless in his last eight Premier League games against West Ham (D3 L5), having won five in a row before that and has an equally poor record against David Moyes, losing each of his last eight against the Hammers’ boss.

Wilfried Gnonto scored against West Ham in the reverse fixture, and the unpredictably creative winger will be hoping to build on his tally to help Leeds to safety. At 19, though, there is still an immaturity to the Italy international’s game, chiefly his disciplinary record — only Bobby Decordova-Reid (eight) has more yellow cards in the Premier League this season among wingers than Wilfried Gnonto (seven).
Leeds have both scored and conceded in each of their last 11 league games (17 scored, 31 conceded), whilst also conceding 150 league goals since the start of last season (79 in 2021-22, 71 this season), more than any other side in the big five European leagues. It’s the most league goals they’ve shipped across two consecutive top-flight seasons since the 166 between 1958-59 (74) and 1959-60 (92), being relegated from the top-flight in the latter.
