After finally being promoted to the top flight as champions in 2019/20, Leeds’ stay in the Premier League lasted just three seasons as they finished 19th last campaign. Many expected the Whites to go straight back up, and after missing out on automatic promotion to Leicester and Ipswich, Daniel Farke has the chance to complete the job against a Southampton side who are also looking for an instant return.
The Saints’ 11-year stay in the Premier League finally ended in 2022/23 as they finished bottom, with neither Ralph Hasenhüttl, Nathan Jones, nor Ruben Selles able to stop them from the dreaded drop. This season under Russell Martin, however, they have returned to attacking, free-flowing football and are now just one match away from joining Leicester and Ipswich back in the top flight at the first time of asking.
Southampton have beaten Leeds in both meetings in the Championship this season, winning 3-1 at St. Mary’s before Adam Armstrong and Will Smallbone gave them a 2-1 victory at Elland Road. With just two points separating them in the table and the sheer importance of the match, this should be another close game, with the losers having to pick themselves up once more and go again next season.

Adam Armstrong missed out on the Championship Golden Boot to Sammie Szmodics this season, but he still had an incredible goalscoring campaign. The 27-year-old scored 21 goals and provided 13 assists in his 46 appearances during the season, adding two more goals in the play-off semi-final second-leg against West Brom to help book his side’s place at Wembley.
