AC Milan looking for a return to form
After looking like early title contenders, AC Milan must now resign themselves to being content with holding on to third place for the rest of the season. Some inconsistent form has led to Stefano Pioli’s men falling 13 points behind leaders and arch-rivals Inter with one game more played, while they also trail Juventus in second by four points.
Perhaps more worrying is the fact that Atalanta in fifth are only seven points behind them with a game in hand, with the two sides separated in the table by surprise package Bologna.
Milan’s form isn’t great heading into this match, with a shock 4-2 defeat to Monza followed up by a 3-2 loss against Rennes in the Europa League. Thankfully, Milan won the first leg 3-0 so went through, while the 1-1 draw with Atalanta last time out will be viewed as a more positive result. But it still means they’re winless in three heading to one of the toughest away grounds in Serie A.
Pioli will take heart from his side’s performance against Atalanta, of course, as well as the fact Milan have beaten Lazio 2-0 in each of the last two meetings between these sides. Looking further back, it’s five victories in the last six meetings across all competitions.
“This performance must give us all confidence and strength going forward, so we want to take the same approach against Lazio on Friday,” Pioli said after the Atalanta match, adding: “Right now, we must try to stabilise third place and potentially try to catch Juventus in second.”
