The dream of home glory goes on for Ivory Coast and they’re just two wins away from making it come true. Hosts of this year’s tournament, Ivory Coast have been carried through the stages by their home support, which seems to get louder with every match. Two-time kings of the continent, Ivory Coast suffered a little after their last success in 2015, with a group stage, last 16 and quarter-final exit. This year they appeared so close to another group stage exit, scraping through as the fourth-best third-placed team, thanks to Ghana falling apart in their final group game. In the last 16 they needed an 86th-minute equaliser to stay in the tournament, eventually beating Senegal on penalties, and it was a similar story in the quarter-finals. This time, however, the equaliser against Mali came in the 90th minute and then they won it in the second minute of injury time at the end of extra time, sending the crowd into raptures.
Hoping to spoil the party are DR Congo, also two-time African champions. Their last success came in 1974 when they were still known as Zaire, and they’re also looking to reach the final for the first time since then. There have been two semi-final exits during that time, most recently in 2015. But they followed that up by losing in the quarter-finals and then the last 16 before failing to qualify in 2021. Bizarrely, DR Congo have reached the semi-finals by winning just one match. They drew all three group stage games and then won in the last 16 on penalties, knocking out Egypt. Their first official match win of the tournament came in the quarter-finals as they came from behind to beat Guinea 3-1.
