Inspiring history-chasing Azzurri

Luciano Spalletti is well aware that history is not on Italy’s side. Since its inception in 1960, only one nation has successfully defended their European crown, with Spain achieving back-to-back success during an unprecedented four-year period between 2008 and 2012 which also saw them lift the World Cup. Spalletti was appointed as Italy head coach after the Azzurri failed to reach Qatar 2022, ending Roberto Mancini’s reign.

Mancini led Italy to unexpected glory at the belatedly held Euro 2020 championship. Italy are not among the favourites, but that does not deter Spalletti, who is doing everything to inspire his team. It was recently revealed that he invited four Italian legends, Roberto Baggio, Alessandro Del Piero, Francesco Totti, and Giancarlo Antognoni, to watch an Azzurri training session at Coverciano before Euro 2024 this summer.

“When we start preparation for the Euros at Coverciano, I’d like to bring four No.10: Baggio, Del Piero, Totti and Antognoni,” he told Il Corriere dello Sport.

Spalletti had previously warned his players that they would not be allowed to play PlayStation while with the national team. Italian media interpreted this as a message directed at Atalanta star Gianluca Scamacca, who was not called up for games against Ecuador and Venezuela. However, Spalletti did not name any specific player in his latest interview. “It is a general thing that must be interpreted,” he said.

Italy go into this one unbeaten in four games since a 3-1 defeat to England at Wembley. Alongside a draw with Ukraine, Italy have beaten North Macedonia, Venezuela and Ecuador. And they’ll be hoping to carry that momentum into Euro 2024. Turkey, on the other hand, have lost their past two games including a 6-1 defeat to Austria in a friendly in March.

Italy vs Turkey match tip

Over 2.5 goals @ 4/6 with Midnite

Although they may give their own fans problems when watching, Italy have been good for the neutral. Since the start of 2023, eight of Italy’s 12 games across all competitions have seen at least three goals scored. It’s a similar story for Turkey too, with six of their 12 games since the start of 2023 seeing at least three goals scored.

Italy vs Turkey odds

Italy are odds-on favourites for this game and one look at their history with Turkey will explain why. The Azzurri are yet to lose to Turkey in their 13 previous meetings, winning 10. Turkey are also out of form with back-to-back defeats in March, including a 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Austria.

Italy vs Turkey team news

Spalletti named a 30-man squad for their two international friendlies, so four need to drop before Euro 2024. Two of those have already gone, with Francesco Acerbi and Giorgio Scalvini both injured — the latter tearing his ACL. Gianluca Scamacca is also a doubt, only bringing his 2023/24 campaign with Atalanta to an end on Sunday.

Vincenzo Montella has gone bigger than Spalletti, with 35 players on hand to represent Turkey. Of course, that means nine will need to be dropped before their Euro 2024 squad is finalised. They may not have Salih Ozcan and Arda Guler who were both unused substitutes in the Champions League final for Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid respectively. Guler is more likely to be unavailable, celebrating victory with his Real Madrid team.
