A battle between two winless sides
Although we are only at the start of the year when it comes to the international calendar, neither of these sides are in great form. Ireland missed out of qualifying for Euro 2024, handed a tough group, so this year will be about getting things up and running again before the UEFA Nations League starts in September. And there’s two games against England to look forward to.
Ireland could be forgiven for their failure to qualify, placed in a group alongside France and Netherlands, but they also underwhelmed against Greece. Their six points in the qualifying group came in two wins over Gibraltar, and they only managed to beat Latvia in a friendly all year. That’s 10 games, six defeats, three wins and a draw. Ireland started 2024 with a goalless draw against Belgium, in John O’Shea’s first game as interim manager, and they had chances including a missed penalty from Evan Ferguson. A positive in some respects, the draw did extend Ireland’s winless run now to three games.
But Switzerland are in as bad, or perhaps even worse, form. Switzerland had a pretty straightforward qualifying group for Euro 2024 and they sealed their spot in the tournament with a second-placed finish. Their only defeat in qualifying was a 1-0 loss to Romania in their final game, when there was only top spot to play for with both nations already qualified.
Switzerland have an interesting group this summer facing hosts Germany at Euro 2024 as well as Hungary and Scotland, so they’ll need to be on the right track if they are to get out of the group. But, they’re not in good form. Although Switzerland did lose just one of their 10 qualifying games, it came as part of a wider winless run. Switzerland were cruising towards top spot before ending the campaign with three draws and a defeat. That has since been added to too, as Switzerland opened 2024 with a goalless draw against Denmark at the weekend.
Ireland vs Switzerland match tip
As mentioned, neither of these two nations are in the best of form. Ireland are winless in their past three games, with two draws against New Zealand and Belgium after their 1-0 defeat to Netherlands. Switzerland, meanwhile, lost to Romania alongside draws against Denmark, Kosovo, Israel and Belarus.
Ireland vs Switzerland odds
Switzerland are the favourites for this game, but neither side are really convincing. Ireland are also priced at roughly the same odds as a draw too, which goes some way to explaining their chances. Of course, the uninspiring runs from both sides will have played a factor, as well as the general uncertainty of closer friendlies.
Ireland vs Switzerland team news
Ireland remain without Liam Scales and Troy Parrott, both of whom had to pull out of the squad through injury. Joe Hodge and Andy Moran have been promoted from the U21s squad. Robbie Brady is the top scorer in the Ireland squad with nine goals.
Gregor Kobel had to pull out of the squad due to injury, with Yann Sommer starting in goal against Denmark. However, Sommer has returned to his club too having had to come off injured against Denmark. He has been replaced in the squad by Jonas Omlin.
