A slow start to the post-Kenny era
The Stephen Kenny era came to an end after Ireland’s failure to qualify for Euro 2024, but John O’Shea hasn’t had the best of starts to his interim stint. The former centre-back will surely hope to put his name in the hand for the new permanent manager, though this is first non-assistant manager role.
O’Shea oversaw Ireland’s two friendlies in March without success, though his first game was a goalless draw with Belgium. Although Belgium’s Golden Generation looks to have passed, no one will have expected Ireland to avoid defeat as they did. But, a negative was that Ireland didn’t score a goal and they also failed to find the net in a 1-0 defeat to Switzerland last time out. So, while Ireland have tightened their defence, they are now struggling at the other end of the pitch.
Hungary, meanwhile, are preparing for Euro 2024. At the European Championships for the third consecutive tournament, Hungary have an interesting group against hosts Germany, Scotland and Switzerland.
This is the first of two pre-tournament friendlies for Hungary, who host Israel in Debrecen a week before their open their Euro 2024 campaign against Switzerland. Hungary come into this game in good form, unbeaten in their past 14 matches since a 2-0 defeat to Italy in the 2022 UEFA Nations League. That run saw Hungary qualify for Euro 2024 without defeat, including home-and-away victories over Serbia.

Republic of Ireland vs Hungary odds
Hungary are favourites for this game but it’s closer than some might have expected. Ireland’s home advantage will definitely be playing its part in the odds, but Hungary should still have enough quality to keep their unbeaten run going.
