Ireland vs England prediction: Lee Carsley gets Three Lions stint underway

Lee Carsley will get his first taste of senior England management when the Three Lions face the Republic of Ireland in the Nations League on Saturday.

Three Republic of Ireland vs England predictions

Bukayo Saka Over 0.5 Shots on Target (10/11 with bet365)

Only Erling Haaland has recorded more shots on target in the Premier League than Bukayo Saka this season. The Arsenal man has registered seven across three games so far this term for his club side and found the net for England this summer at the Euros with a sensational strike against Switzerland. Sky Bet go just 1/2 that he hits the target at least once on Saturday, so take the considerably bigger offering of 10/11 that is available with bet365.

Declan Rice to be fouled 1 or more times (5/4 with Paddy Power)

Declan Rice changed his international allegiance in 2019 after making three caps for the Republic of Ireland. The midfielder, who has gone on to play 58 times for England, may have a bit of a target on his back here and could be in for some heavy tackles in a hostile atmosphere. At the Euros, he was fouled in three of England’s four knockout matches and twice on the opening day of the new Premier League campaign. Considering the context of this clash, I’m surprised to see odds-against available, with Paddy Power offering 5/4.

Trent Alexander-Arnold to Score Anytime (9/1 with Sky Bet

Lee Carsley has vowed to play a more attacking style of football than Gareth Southgate, and one player who could benefit from this is Trent Alexander-Arnold. A potential free-kick taker, and as we saw in England’s opener against Serbia at the Euros when he let off three shots in the first half, he’s not afraid to have a go from distance.

How both teams go into the Republic of Ireland vs England

Ireland vs England
Squawka

A lot of eyes will be on England for this game. It’s the first match post-Gareth Southgate and England fans are hoping for it to be the start of their road to success. Under Southgate, England reached two European Championship finals, losing to Italy on penalties in 2021 and beaten 2-1 by Spain this summer.

Lee Carsley has been drafted in to replace Southgate, at least on an interim basis. The former Ireland international will take charge of England’s two Uefa Nations League matches in September, with a “view to remaining in the position.” Carsley follows in Southgate’s footsteps, having previously been manager of England’s U21s side, leading them to glory in the European Championships last year.

This is also a new era for Ireland. After Stephen Kenny’s departure at the end of 2023, John O’Shea took charge of four matches with mixed results. Ireland won one, drew one and lost two of those four matches, only managing to beat Hungary in June. Their defeats came against Switzerland and Portugal, with a draw against Belgium.

But Heimar Hallgrimsson has now come in as Kenny’s permanent replacement. Hallgrimsson is in his third job as an international football manager, first making the step up with Iceland. He was assistant manager to Lars Lagerback but then became joint manager and finally took charge on his own after Euro 2016. He was part of the managerial team that oversaw Iceland’s run at Euro 2016, including the win over England. Hallgrimsson then moved back to club football with Al-Arabi before returning to the international stage with two years in charge of Jamaica.

Ireland host England at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Saturday 7th September, with kick-off scheduled for 5pm (UK time).

Republic of Ireland team news

Evan Ferguson returns from injury for his national side; however, with a new manager, it’s hard to tell who will start this new era. But we can expect the likes of Sammie Szmodics, Josh Cullen, Will Smallbone, and Michael Obafemi to all be involved, with the former having recently bagged his first Premier League goal for Ipswich.

England team news

Lee Carsley has named four uncapped players in his squad: Angel Gomes, Morgan Gibbs-White, Tino Livromento and Noni Madueke. Harry Kane is set to make his 99th international appearance, while Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins, Jude Bellingham, and Ivan Toney will all watch from home.

Republic of Ireland Ireland vs England head-to-head

This is a largely one-sided rivalry regarding wins, with England gathering six victories to Ireland’s two. Ireland also led England 1-0 in a friendly in 1995 before the game was abandoned, leaving the result void. Including that asterisked stalemate, there have been more draws than any other result in this fixture, with nine of the 17 meetings finishing level.
