Inter Milan vs Atalanta Serie A prediction: Champions looking to continue their momentum

Defending champions Inter Milan are unbeaten heading into matchday three of the Serie A season.

The Nerazzurri, who sit in second place with four points after two matches, will play host to an Atalanta side that suffered their first loss of the campaign last time out.

How both teams go into Inter Milan vs Atalanta

Inter started their Scudetto defence with a 2-2 draw in Genoa earlier this month. Simone Inzaghi’s men were eager to secure a victory over Lecce when they faced each other in Milan last weekend. Matteo Darmian scored five minutes into the game before Hakan Calhanoglu later sealed the victory by converting a penalty, extending his streak to 17 consecutive penalty conversions in Serie A, setting a new record since 2005/06.

This surpassed Giampaolo Pazzini’s record of 16 between 2012 and 2020. Additionally, Calhanoglu has scored three goals against Atalanta in Serie A, with only Fiorentina being on the receiving end of more goals from him (five).

Atalanta had an impressive 4-0 victory against Lecce on the first day of the season. However, they suffered a 2-1 loss in Turin, despite initially taking the lead through Mateo Retegui, who has now scored in both of his first two league appearances for Atalanta. Only two players have achieved this feat for La Dea in Serie A: Christian Vieri in 1995 and Franck Kessie in 2016 during the three-points-for-a-win era.

Inter Milan host Atalanta at the San Siro on Friday at 7:45pm.

Inter Milan latest team news

Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi may have to manage without captain Lautaro Martinez this week due to a muscular issue that has been bothering him since last season when he was the top scorer in Serie A.

Former Porto striker Mehdi Taremi started in the game against Lecce and is expected to keep his place upfront alongside Marcus Thuram, ahead of Marko Arnautovic.

On the defensive front, Stefan de Vrij has resumed full training and may be available for selection. Summer signing Piotr Zielinski could also be on the bench, while Tajon Buchanan is still out of action due to a leg injury.

Atalanta latest team news

Gian Piero Gasperini continues to address various gaps in his squad. Teun Koopmeiners has left to join Juventus, and Europa League standout Ademola Lookman is also likely to be transferred. El Bilal Toure recently left for Stuttgart, and goalkeeper Juan Musso is heading to Atletico Madrid.

Additionally, Giorgio Scalvini and Gianluca Scamacca are both dealing with long-term injuries, while Sead Kolasinac and Mitchel Bakker won’t be available this weekend. Experienced players Rui Patricio and Juan Cuadrado have joined the team, and new addition Raoul Bellanova will compete with Davide Zappacosta for a spot at wing-back.

After scoring three goals in his first two Serie A games for La Dea, Mateo Retegui will team up with former Milan forward Charles De Ketelaere in the attacking third.

Inter Milan vs Atalanta head-to-head

Inter are unbeaten in their last 11 league games against Atalanta (six wins and five draws) – already a record run against this opponent in Serie A – winning each of the last four – the Dea’s last success came back in November 2018 (4-1 at the Gewiss Stadium).
