In what is only their fourth top-flight season, Girona are threatening to make waves in La Liga. After seven games of the 2023/24 La Liga campaign, Girona are one of just two teams still unbeaten in the top flight, alongside fellow Catalan side Barcelona. However, it is Girona who sit alone at the top of the table.

After a draw with Real Sociedad on the opening weekend of the season, Girona have set up a run of six straight victories, the best streak in the division. Getafe, Sevilla, Las Palmas, Granada, Real Mallorca and Villarreal have all fallen to Girona, who will be hoping to keep it going.

The story of Girona is an interesting one, promoted to La Liga in 2021/22 via the play-offs, having finished sixth in the regular season. They beat Eibar and Tenerife to reach the top flight, with Cristhian Stuani scoring 22 goals. The former Middlesbrough man is now captain of Girona, scoring nine goals last season as they secured a 10th-placed finish in La Liga. He’s not the only familiar name in their squad either, with Daley Blind joining from Bayern Munich in the summer. The Dutchman has started six of their seven league games so far, mostly at centre-back, but he was utilised at left-back last weekend.

Blind may be the good luck charm Girona have been dreaming of, having won the league title in each of his last three seasons, two with Ajax and then with Bayern last season, despite his short stay. Girona are the joint-top scorers in La Liga this season with 18 goals scored, shared across 11 different scorers.

But this isn’t exactly a rags to riches story. It’s worth noting that Girona are part of the City Football Group, founded and owned by Manchester City’s owners. Man City are the flagship team, with Girona joined by New York City, Melbourne City, Mumbai City, Montevideo City, Yokohama F. Marinos, Sichuan Jiuniu, Lommel, Troyes, Palermo and Bahia.

Girona have benefitted from the partnership, with Yangel Herrera spending last season on loan at the club from Man City before making the move permanent in the summer. Yan Couto is another currently on loan from Man City, while Savio is on loan from Troyes. Girona are also joined in leading their division by Man City, of course, with Lommel top of the Belgian First Division B (Belgian’s second tier), and Sichuan Jiuniu leading the Chinese second tier.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, tasted defeat in La Liga for the first time last weekend, beaten by rivals Atletico Madrid on the road. But it wasn’t just an unbeaten start coming to an end, Real Madrid had been perfect in La Liga, winning all five of their opening matches. Los Blancos are looking to take their title back from Barcelona and did start in emphatic fashion, with wins over Athletic Bilbao, Almeria, Celta Vigo, Getafe and Real Sociedad. They did bounce back against Las Palmas on Thursday, so now it’s about stretching the run.

Girona vs Real Madrid match tip

Girona to score first @ 13/10 with Paddy Power

Real Madrid may have been perfect up until last weekend, but it wasn’t exactly smooth sailing. Including the 3-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid, Los Blancos have conceded the first goal in four of their seven La Liga matches so far. Of course, Real Madrid came from behind to win three of those games.

Girona vs Real Madrid Bet-Builder tip

Under 3.5 goals & BTTS

Girona are the joint-top scorers in La Liga this season with 18 goals scored, but Real Madrid’s matches haven’t been too exciting. Despite seeing 19 goals scored in their six games, Real Madrid have only scored more than twice in one of their seven league matches so far.
